The WBSA is holding a 2 day Pro Am style tournament out of Lorain on Sept. 12 & 13. With a $100.00 Am entry fee, it's a great value as well as being an fun & exciting weekend.

Having fished many PWT & FLW events I can say that it's always quite interesting to spend the day in a boat one on one with an other fish head.

Go the "WBSA" and click on Gator Classic for details.

Heck at 50 bucks a day, it's cheaper than running your own boat.

The level of expertise shown in the LEWT events this year was very impressive, and they won't suffer for lack of quality fishermen. The list of pros is on the web site.

I hope to see many OGFers there.

Thanks for posting this jim!

We expect a surge of pro side signups later this month before the deadline of Sept 1st.

At least some of them will need counterparts and they will be taken from the Am waiting list. That list is short right now but is expected to grow and we will for sure need more Am entries.

It would benefit those wanting to fish the Am side to sign up early to better ensure a spot when one comes available. Am entries are refundable if no Pro counterpart is available so you will get your money back if you don't make it in. We will even reimburse your $5 paypal fee if you sign up through Pay Pal.

Like Jim said, we set this up to be very affordable for those wanting to fish as Am's. Along with the great LEWT sticks we will have, there will be several touring pros on board as well.

Besides, it's a week before Hawg Fest and where better to prefish for it than with some of the top Erie fishermen in the country.

If you look at the roster, there are a number of long time Lake Erie fishermen signed up as amateurs.

Anyone care to give their opinion as to why they would sign up as amateurs?
IMO, I cant fish on my own boat for $50 a day (plus bait and fuel costs to the pro). The knowledge i can gain by fishing with a long time Veteran to the game is going to be priceless. Its going to be a good time all around.

I am very interested in possibly entering on the Am side of things but have never been in a tournament. Can anybody tell me more about the skill level and equipment required expected for an amateur to participate? Extra money required? Will we just be fishing Saturday and Sunday? Pre fishing?
Feel free to PM me, I'm very interested.

what constitutes a pro ? is a charter capt a pro or an am ?

These are legitimate questions including the one from Hetfield.

1. what constitutes a pro ? is a charter capt a pro or an am? Pro is a relative term when tourney fishing. Some circuits have changed it to boater, which I think is silly. We defined pro on our website as someone with the confidence and financial ability to enter in the pro side. It does not mean they make their living from fishing. We also put a length restriction of 17' on the boat.

No experience is required and actually some pros prefer it that way. You will be using the pros equipment only and won't be allowed to bring any fishing gear with you. you can bring a personal life jacket but the pros will have them. The only extra money required is $20 for club membership and the big fish jackpot if you want to get in it. Tips are voluntary and don't let anyone tell you different The tourney is Sat and Sunday. Prefishing can probably be arranged either on here or the WBSA message board by asking for a ride if your available. The Gator section is open to guests for posting and if you sign up you'll get full access to the rest of the board. No prefishing information can be shared with your pro's, period. You will meet both of your pros at the rules meeting on Friday afternoon. Ask them what you are allowed to bring along. I'd suggest that whatever you bring along be small in size and easily tucked out of the way.

Het, I know a lot of pro's that like to fish the Am side now and then. Much less expensive, and relaxing compared to the pro side but still competitive.

As one of the "long time Lake Erie fishermen signed up as a am" let me say why. I fished this year with Mark Brumbaugh, former PWT Nat'l. Champion. We decided to do the tournament, and that meant me on the am side.

I've fished the amateur side in a few FLWs and found it to be morre relaxing, much less intense pressure, and an overall good time.

Also the boat I could use (a 18' Crestliner Canadian tiller w/ a 90 Yamaha), is not what I'd consider Lake Erie tournament material.

That's 3 reasons, but beyond that, I get a kick out of fishing with any other guy (or gal) who is really into Lake Erie fishing. There's always some little something that they do differently, that catches my attention. I've fished with Marc (obviously), Keith Kavijas, Pete Harsh, Juls, Rick LaCourse, Ron Johnson, Kieth Unkafer, FreeByrd Steve Carlson, Scott Stecher, Dave Mull, Blue Dolphin Gary Zart, and many other serious fishheads, and enjoyed the experiences.

Het, Kgone, & Travis Hartman are 3 guys that I hope to get out with in the future. I doubt we'd lack for interesting conversation.

I hope this splains why.... Later, Jim

ps bigdaddy300, lack of confidence, is what keeps people on the outside looking in.

ok so just to clarify....

when does the $20 fee get paid to become a member for this event???

i was also told that even though we paid through paypal, a registration form still needs to be mailed in? is this correct? address to be sent to?
You can pay the membership anytime between now and registration. Yes you still need to send in both membership and Gator entry forms. The address is on the forms. www.wbsa.us/gator

George, just get in the tournament as pro, you and ezbite can finish your fued over spoons vs. harnesses! :) After day 2 the scales will tell the truth...! There is nothing to be scared of. Trust me. Its just another day of fishing! And its a great time of the year.

A pro just means your put more money to fish. Fishing competitively will force you to become better. Besides, you spend just as much if not more e on the water then a half the field.

The "Pro" thing should not deter anyone.

Remember boys.... Its fishing, not catching!

well spoons of course.....duh :D

im just interested in going out there like jim said and see what other little "things" people do differently. It will be nice to step out of the hardtop and the steering wheel and lay hands on some of the action....hopefully.

how do they do the amatuer weights?

The weight you and your partner from day 1 catch, goes with both of you toward your total the next day. Then both day's weights from the boats you were on are totaled giving you your weight of fish. Did I confuse you, are did you follow that?
