long pair of pliers....or bend a stiff coat hanger into a "U" shape. I made about 6 of these for perch fishing and you never have to touch the fish the whole day. Works great.

 

Peerless turned me on to one of these things, bait shops have them, great for steelies and eye balls. I've been to the ER twice because of reef runner hooks, I'm ALOT more careful, If I get a fiesty one in the boat I bust this thing out, problem solved. DON'T use this if you plan on releasing the fish though if you do be careful not to get it in the gills and only put it in against the side of the gill plate.

 

reel get yourself a small ball bat. It takes all of the guess work out of it. When the fish is in the net, just give it a crack between the eyes, then remove the hook and bleed the fish. That's if you are not going to release it obviously. I have two and they both are named!

Should come out easy though with no barb on it!

 

The cheapest thing I have found for removing hooks is an old aluminum arrow shaft. Cut a notch in the end of it that a hook can fit in and you have an instant hook removal tool. I will plug fur fish and game magazine for the idea it works great!

 

I usually give 'em a good thumping before removing hook. I do that mainly so they wont flop around in the bucket, while I'm bleeding them out.

 

They's string you up down this way using a gill type device like that!!!

Boga Grips is the best way to handle any fish for a safe release.

 

I have the Het and shortdrift endorsed orange fish gripper thingies. Works great for stabilizer for hook removal, then bonk or release your choice.

VERY durable and the price is right too.

I'm pretty sure Steve puts the fish on a stringer and drags the fish after cutting the gills!

 

Actually, I use a 7 gallon bucket with a twist on lid. I'll be using a recirculating live well this season.

 

There is no better sound then the aluminum "pinging" off the head of a good King Salmon!!!

i suppose you could cut there gills and then let them bleed out while on a stringer. i havent used a stringer since i got off the bank years ago though. bleed 'em in a bucket then into a cooler.

hey guys, i made up some stainless hook removers in my shop! every one that used them said they were great so i made a bunch and now call them gill grab-its i will post some pictures soon i hope. i am going to the bait shops soon to try to put them out there 4- sale thanks dan

 

I bought a Gill Grab-it from Dan at our NCA meeting the other day and I think it will work excellent. Hopefully, I'll get to try it in a couple weeks.
