I have a few trolling questions that maybe some of you guys can help me with. I havent fished erie in several years. I bought a new boat this year and have a cabin rented on SBI. for the first week of August. I have never trolled with boards before, and am about half way through the process of buying just enough stuff to get me started. What would be a good set up to start with. Probably 4 to 6 rods at a time, and want to avoid a tangled mess if possible. Will probably do some drifting and casting , but have plenty of equipment for that. Also i have heard some mention of rpm's. I have a 90 horse four stroke Merc.. Obviously i dont want to burn it up. I am assuming i will have to use a bag/sock to get ideal trolling speed. Do i have to be concerned with rpm's?. Do any of you troll with your trolling motor (electic).Mine is a motorguide wireless, which has variable speeds (which is the only thing i like about it), so i was thinking if it wasnt to rough and i could keep it in the water, that would be a possibility. I would like to try to get out once before i go , more so to observe, with a charter,or someone who has some space and does mind teaching a rookie. Problem is , i work weekends and days off are in the middle of the week. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Mike

4 to 6 rods would be good being you are just learning i would start with dipsey divers two on each side and a flatline on each side.would put power pro 30# line on rods so you can trip dipsey that would be a good start.
as for your motor not sure but should be good with bags out your electric trolling moter would be ok to help steer you do not whant to kill your batteries out there

if your boat goes slow enough to troll at idle rpm,s it shouldnt hurt the engine. but most of the time they just dont run that slow. then your going to need bags or trolling plate to slow you down enough to troll. if you use bags i reccomend 1 small one on each side of the boat over 1 large one on 1 side. it just helps with boat control. myself i chose to use a trolling plate. it works good for us. and i started with the happy troller, but tried to take off with the plate still down. it bent the cra# out of my plate. so i switched to the easy troller plate, it is hinged about half way up and is spring loaded, so if you try to take off with the plate down it will swing up and not bend the cra# out of your plate. these are just my opinions.
