Second Rut?

Happy Thanksgiving OGF.

I'm new to bow hunting so hunting the rut is completely foreign to me. Gun season in Ohio just, is what it is, and doesn't ever seem to fall during the rut. The general consensus in another post here is, the rut is on from around Halloween until about Veterans Day. My trail cam got a lot of pics during this time. The last deer I got a picture of was the day after Veterans Day. After that nothing. So I guess we are now in a lock down phase?

So my question is... is there a second and third rut? Specifically in Northeast Ohio (Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties). If so, any idea when the bucks will start moving again? Thanks in advance OGF.

What people call a “second rut” is nothing like the actual rut. The only way you’ll see any rutting activity is if there happens to be a hot doe very close. Bucks focus solely on food, they don’t go actively looking for hot does like they are now. They will come across the occasional hot doe or last springs fawn as they go about their night, and they’ll check any does when they come across them, but there’s not enough breeding activity to keep them preoccupied. After gun season, all hunting should focus on food or paths toward food.

Not sure I 100% agree with this as far as the 2nd rut NEVER being like the first.
As a rule ...if ruts go as usual....I believe you are right.
But have witnessed over the years where the first rut was very minimal compared to usual 1st rut action and for whatever reason and the second rut quit strong. Remember one season about 6-7 years ago that it seemed we had an unordinary amount of fawns dropped late in the year. That year we had a decent first rut...a great second rut(as second ruts go) and even a third rut in this area.
Remember another year long ago where we has extremely warm and dry weather and the first rut wasn't all that but second rut was strong with a lot of chasing going on.

At any rate 3-4 years ago I watched a nice buck ride a doe clear across a huge cut field in the middle of March. Was about 10AM and there were two does in the field. Buck came out... scent checked both and peeled hot doe away.

I don't bow hunt nearly as hard as I used to but used to gauge the 2nd rut by what was seen the first go round and plan my time off work according. If the first rut was minimal...I was hanging in the tree every minute I could 2nd go around.

There are still bucks cruising looking now after the original rut.Not nearly as many bucks but if the gun season starts a little earlier than usual,we have taken nice bucks on the move without being pressured.Gun season is a little earlier than usual this year and with cold weather should be productive.Doe will cycle again after 30 days and go into heat again if they didn't get pregnant the first time.So also do some doe fawns. This second rut seams to occur around the extra weekend of gun season.Ive taken some nice bucks during that extra weekend.Good luck and be safe

This morning on my way home a nice 130 inch buck had a doe locked down in a corn field. I'm assuming she will get bred today. About 2 weeks ago that same buck had a different doe also locked down in that same corn field for several hours

I would say that the vast majority of does get bred in first rut,as long as there are enough bucks around. But warmer weather will limit amount of rut activity seen during daylight hours. Then the rutting activity occurs at night.I have seen good rut activity during 2nd rut,but was usually associated with a hot doe nearby.

Thanks to all who replied. Another reason I love OGF. I'm slowly putting knowledge together. In 15 years or so I may know something.

I'm just behind on all this stuff for this season. My son, who's 21 and never showed an interest in hunting, told me in October he wants to start deer hunting. So this season is going to be a lot of learning together and maybe a deer as a bonus. Thanks again everyone.

FWIW...about hunting and learning...been hunting for about 55yrs and still learning. That's one of the big things that keeps it interesting.
To me...the actual kill has never been enjoyable(if it ever becomes so I'll quit hunting)...but the experience and learning along the way is.

As stated above .....always learning

What life is all about ,and in most cases free if willing to learn and spend some time to do so

My best buck was taken in muzzle loader season in early January several years ago. His neck was about 35% larger than normal(per an old and experienced taxidermist). He had to use an extra large neck mold to make it look the same as it was the day taken. Though a bit rare, he said the big boy was definitely still rutting. Both g2's were doubled and one tine broken off from fighting near each main beam which would have made it a 13 point. Sadly the mount was destroyed in a house fire two weeks ago, along with the striper mount in my avatar pic.
