Is anyone using shorter rods for dipsys? What rod do you use?

Looking to replace my Shimano TDR8-6 Med Heavy /action MFast with possibly a shorter rod. I use Diawa Accu Depth 27 with braid and it just seems like its an unbalanced combo. Is anyone running a shorter rod say like a 8' or even a 7' rod?. What are the pros and cons of the shorter rod? I run 7' board rods and love them. Thanks

I use 7 foot ugly stick with 6 foot leader also for both dipsys and inline boards. Bonus is that you don't have to worry about breaking them with a non-experienced crew and you don't have to change reels or carry extra outfits to give the dipsy a go if program changes. Saying that...there are more rods that have a lighter tip that I like better for just inline boards but won't handle a dipsy. Have some planer rods from bass pro designed by Parsons and Kravitz and have fished with Tubuzz and his rods (which I believe are 7 ft Heartlands) that I like better for just inlines. One downside of ugly sticks....not a big fan of the reel seats. Overall I'm a big fan of the shorter 7 footers regardless of brand. Plus can store better as a one piece rod.

Moke - I like the longer rods because it's easier for the fisherman to lift the rod tip higher, at the end of the fight, and slide the fish across the water to the net. I've had more trouble landing fish with shorter rods, especially with inexperienced fishermen reeling them in. I've run dipsies for a long time salmon fishing on Erie. It's sure nice to have 2 different length dipsey rods if you run more than one dipsey per side. It just makes it lots nicer setting and resetting lines when you have the length difference, especially if the rods are in close proximity.

BTW - If you get rid of your TDR8-6 rods, let me know.

Dave, I'm not to worried about losing fish, but I know what you are saying about raising the rod tip to get the fish in the net. I will keep you in mind on those rods, I even have two 9' too. the 7' rods store so much easier and seem to be much better balanced.

I have the newer 7' Ugly Stix GX2 in medium heavy. Goolies runs the mediums. I like the mediums a little better after using both. The reel is closer to rod butt end on the mediums. No problem using 10' dipsy leaders on my 19' boat with them.

Let me know if you need the exact model #.

I have run the med action 7ft GX2 Ugly Stiks. They work ok but I think the Dipsy puts a lot of pressure on the reel seats. That's at slow speeds 1.3-1.7. Faster would be worse. With that said I prefer the 8ft med action TDR's. Much stronger and work well at any speed. Affordable and perform well IMOP. Good fishing Moke!

I have been using the TDR's and I the only problem have had was I had a broken rod guide and I did not know it and I lost 2 dipsys because it cut the braid ( it was not the tip ). Does the braid eat away at the guides? Speaking of that I need to replace those Dipsy's.lol

I lost a nice muskie and two favorite cranks to the same problem. It was the reason I switched to the Ugly Stix. Only 2 seasons on them. Too soon to tell on guide wear.

Wow you have some heavy hitters weighing in my opinion and its only my personal preference I like longer rods 8'-8'6-steel line.
8'-8'6-9' board rods .
9'-9'6-10 dipsie rods
Jiging rods 5'6-6'
I have a very good landing ratio, I also run long leaders so the long rod helps .
I fish primary walleye, salmon, steel head , musky I like longer rods for the quick runs ,head shaking thrashing and Big hits ect... I only know what works very well for me..

I'm with you Burnin Daylight, I use longer rods as well. I think for the hard hitting fish like salmon and steelhead it has helped me boat more fish.

I run 7'6 rods for my #3 dipsys and a 5' Rod on my #1 dipsys. Seems to work good for me. I also run 10' leaders especially on the east side (Geneva ). I just seem to like the shorter Rod for the handiness as far as separating the rod tips while trolling. Both rods laying flat horizontal out the side of the boat. I do have a 8' net handle so never really have a problem netting with 5' Rod and 10' leader. I must say it's pretty cool catching a hog eye on a short rod!
