Last year was my first year really getting into trolling and my first year using planer boards. I use the offshore boards with tattle flags but with a jet diver off of them i found them hard to read. I then began to just adjust my drag so if a fish hit the board it will pull drag and i would then just tighten the drag, i didnt seem to lose many fish but was wondering if anyone else uses this method or if there is a better way. I dont mind using it but i take alot of very inexperienced fisherman out and they dont always grasp the concept.

It's an easy and effective way to give yourself a bite indicator that you hear.

My suggestion would be for you to tighten down the drag to an appropiate level, and then hand the rod off. After all you can't expect a newbie to know how to adjust the drag.

Either that or show them exactly how much you want the drag tightend.

Loosen drag and have the clicker on is the best way by far to read your rods.Big Fish Tuff Tackle has designed a TRU-TRIP 30 that will accommodate in-line boards way better and still dive to near 40 feet. IT will be out this spring. Testing was completed last fall.

since no one mentioned this i will. when i run big boards i use jets or inline weights. but when i run the small offshore boards then its all inline weights like the rednek 1oz,2oz or the 3oz. looking at my charts the 2oz weight at 1.5 mph is about the same setback and depth as the 40 jet, the3oz at about 2mph same thing about. and the weights dont pull on the boards as much. now I`m thinking you might be pulling spoons, never tried spoons be hide weights. if your running harnesses and worms try the weights way better.

I see you have tattle flags and you still have a hard time reading the boards. first there needs to be some lose line between the front clip and the rear clip, with the line tight between the clips the tattle flags can`t work. if you are leaving some lose line between the clips the extra pull on the jets is sliding the line thru the rear clip. now the line is tight again and the flags wont move. if your using braid it is very slick and hard to keep in the rear clip. some people use 2 or18 releases or they double wrap the line.

I always hear people watch the boards, Me i watch the pole tip. They never lie. Fish on the move or jerk fast. I had a bud of mine on my boat. charter captain, we went back and forth about it. at the end of day he said, wow you can read the pole tip. :)
