Water Levels

Folks,

If you don't know about the lake levels being low by now, you haven't been out fishing! Berlin, Mosquito and West Branch dams were all built primarily for flood control. We saw that happen last year with the high water. Another mission of these dams is what is called low flow augmentation - to maintain certain water levels downstream.

At WB, an agreement was made with both Mahoning and Trumbull counties in which they both contributed over 5 million to the construction of the dam to be able to provide a certain level and temperature of water flowing down the Mahoning. This was initially due to the steel mills, however, the agreement to maintain the level still remains.

This has been a dry year with no snow melt and little to no measurable rain has come our way. Storage at the lakes were already low prior to augmenting the flow downstream. Berlin, Mosquito and WB never made it to summer pool. The lake level is higher at Milton because of an agreement made with them decades ago to keep the water up to a certain level during the summer.

With all that, the water levels of Berlin, Mosquito and WB will continue to decline with boating and facilities being impacted. I've attached our latest reservoir forecast chart (see last page for Berlin, Mosquito and Kirwan).

More than anything when on the water now - SLOW DOWN, watch for obstacles and the other guy, obey the buoy markers, and wear your lifejacket.

Fish Safe!

Thank you for posting that page Ranger Julie. I had never seen one that predicted the levels that far out. Very cool. And you're right about being aware out on the lakes. Hopefully people don't check their brains at the launch ramps.

Bassbme...I think most of the folks you're referring to don't even pack their brains in the car when they leave the house. The brain never even makes it to the ramp!!:p

Referring to mosquito and the sunken bridge will it be marked with a buoy as it gets shallow enough to hinder boat traffic.

OutdoorHub Mobile, the information engine of the outdoors.

I don't think you have to worry about that, its one of the deepest area's of the lake

I tried to hit Ladue at Rt 44 on Thursday and couldn't even get the boat wet without putting all 4 of the car's wheels into the lake. I gave that up and launched at 422 which was only a bit better. South of the causeway the sandbars were up to 1.5 ft.
The PD Friday report says LaDue is good for big bass right now -- strange they didn't mention water level.
