Cleaned some eyes yesterday. Interestingly one was noticeably different than the rest. I noticed when the fish was still 10 feet from the boat. All the Conny eyes are yellow gold while this one was plain silver. Maybe a blue I guess but can't say for sure.

Anyway when I was cleaning them I noticed right away that one eye was not right. It was not the silver one. The meat was all light brown and also a bit soft... almost mushy. Even the cheek meat was discolored. I discarded it. I looked very closely and did not see worms or parasites of any kind. Fish were properly iced too. After reading BoatNut's thread on worms and ice who wouldn't be icing them down!!!

Has anyone else seen anything similar?

Anyone know what causes the condition? Nasty looking stuff I can tell you.

No smell. Just a tan color and meat is not firm at all. Very obvious at a glance. I guess the racoons need to eat too!

Long time no see Jeremy. Having a good year? See you due north! Paul will be there Fri to Sun. Just Saturday for me. Good luck and give that dog a scratch for me. Has the little $h1t settled down at all? Good luck with that too. LOL

Without seeing the fish to be sure, those symptoms sound very much like a disease called walleye myopathy. The muscle degenerates and displays regions of yellowish or brownish discoloration with usually a gritty or tough texture. It's not harmful to humans, but neither is it very appetizing. The cause of the disease is unknown, but some researchers are looking in the direction of nutritional deficiencies - maybe vitamin E or selenium.

I cleaned a nice one this year like that, nice looking fish on the outside and had yellow stipes in the meat that were hard texture. I did not trust eating that one.
