Hello, this is my first post. I'm an avid bass fisherman on the upper rocky river, and would like to shate some of my tips for hot spots and techniques on this river. My favorite places to fish are jsut downstream of the fords in the river, and walking a few hundred extra feet can really increase your sucess. I look for large rocks or downed trees, and areas where submerged channels cause a rapid with pools around them. In these area, bass will congregate near the edges, and look for batfish being carried down the current past the hiding spots. The most sucessful rig i have foundi is a 6'6'' Abu Garcia Black Max graphite rod, A mitchell 308X spinning reel, spooled with 6lb. berkley iron silk in low vis green. This combo gives you the ability to cast near or far, important when fishing in the rapids. The line is a low strecha and is very abrasion resistant, which helps on short strikers. My lures are simple, but very effective. I have had extreme luck using floating crankbaits, such as original Rapalas, the most effective sizes being those with only two treble hooks, and the colors of silver with a black back and white to green bluegill pattern. Simply cast, allow to sit for a few seconds, then slowly retrieve, and if this is not effective, using a stop and go approach usually will draw strikes. On occasion, i also will use a 1/32 or 1/64 oz. hair jugs, tipped with one or 2 maggots, all under a small float. Drifting this rig will also draw strikes from the large bluefill in the river, but, is also deadly for post spawn bass. Well, even though steelhead season is only a few weeks away, these tips should be effective for a little while longer, and hopefully will be next year also.

Good Luck

Thanks for the tips and welcome to the forum, Ed. I started bass-fishing the Rock a couple of months ago when I moved to Lakewood. From what I can tell from my brief experience, your tips hit the nail right on the head. In addition to Rapalas and jigs, I've had a lot of success using in-line spinners and tubes. The key to fishing the Rock is to avoid easy-access areas and walk the river.

How far upstream do you fish? I've found a couple of good holes on the lower Rocky (i.e. downstream from the Rockcliffe access area), mainly by doing a lot of walking, wading, and casting. I'd like to learn more of the river so that I can escape the crowds during the steelhead season -- if that's even possible.

How big do the bass get on the Rock? I don't think I've caught anything over 12-13".

Are you talking about largemouth or smallmouth bass? The Rock is full of little smallies.
And no it is not possible to get away from the crowds on the Rock when the steelies arrive. If you find a good spot they will find you.
