Went to pymie today and did exceptionally well.....caught about 40 crappie, all over 12 inches, and caught lots of monstrous white bass...caught a few jumbo perch as well.....got a lot of them jigging mimic minnows....water was very clear, but also very high......most of the fish were caught near the bottom....will probably be going out again tomorrow if the weather cooperates.....

yea i was actually quite surprised....usually i am on the lake for about a month straight or so starting from the beginning of april and my fiance and i catch them from sun up to sun down...we easily get 200 in a day no exaggeration....but we throw everything we catch back obviously, unless we get a trophy sized fish......the fishing isn't gonna do anything but get better so im looking forward to many more fishing trips....

200 a day is not an exaggeration. I can confirm that. When pymy turns on and you find the fish, its hammer time. I wont even keep a fish unless its 12 inches or better on pymy because there are so many big ones, so why keep the small ones. After a while you throw em all back because you get tired of filleting them.

White bass are good eaters to. Glad to here they are on the wall. This warm weather is what we needed.

Big Doug,

Yea definitely not an exaggeration....every summer when the fish turn on i can easily say i catch at least 700-1000 crappie, but you can only catch them like that when they are on.....usually for me that period last about three weeks, then they are back to the deep water....its exciting to know that they are finally starting to turn on.....

I think I have bumped into you many of times jigging the wall, when I used to walk the wall. The last two years I've used a boat to fish the wall. That way if it rains I am still fishing..lol

Look for the boat that say's "Studebaker" on the side and you will see me.

By the way, my wife keeps records of all the fish we catch and take home. In 2009 I caught over 4200 crappie in a 5 week period. We kept a bunch of those for fish fries, but most I throw back now, or let my clients keep what they want.

Pymy has an over abundance of crappie because of the break from walleye pressure over the last 5 years and it seems the more people catch the greater the increase that following year brings for class size. Go figure...

Doug,

You may have then.....im out there all the time......i love pymie....i think out of all of the lake that i fish, they produce the biggest crappie...(my personal opinion), but there are some huge slabs in there.....late in the fall berlin also has some giants too.....thats pretty cool you keep records.....i have the northern ohio lake and fish maps, and i diagram in it by writing down the jigs i used, water temp, what color jigs, etc.....so that helps when i go back and return to the same spot, so it enables me to catch more fish......haha studebaker....i will be on the lookout next time ......if u happen to see me before i see you, just look for a guy with really long dreads jigging, and thats me....haha happy fishing sir.....:D

Fisherman123. The three most direct routes are 90 east to 11 south to route 6 east to Andover around Andover Square 1/2 way to 85 east and continue east this will take you over the causeway which then becomes 285 in Pa.. Or take route 6 east all the way to Andover then same as above or you can take 322 east which is the southern boundary of the lake. Pymatuning is on the Ohio Pa. border. 2/3 rds of the lake lies in Pa. Just check your fish regulations for specific rules to the lake. Easy to find plenty of state park ramps. Just look it up ODNR maps. Great place for everything.

Just got back today from a five day trip to Pymie. Went for walleye and was not disappointed. have been going for years and have noticed a decline over the last few years in the numbers we are catching. THIS YEAR we were catching MANY fish (walleye) with most being 12 to 14 inches. Never quite got limited out but kept several fish each day. Caught some crappie in the mix as well s perch and some dandy large and small mouth bass. Little bit of rainy weather on Friday night and part of Saturday.

just got back from a 3 day trip there and did pretty good catchin walleye, only 4 keepers though. Caught plenty of others but to small. We were using jig heads and caught the 4 biggest eyes on a walleye diver trolling. Only caught two crappie surprisingly. Caught a lot of nice largemouth and smallies but no lunkers which is what we were after. Surprised at how shallow that lake is in the middle having never fished it before.
