I agree that the lake should be closed for a little while when the stocking is done. The experience really shows a different type of fisherman -- casting for the trout as they slide out of the truck. Especially in that lake, where they can survive throughout the year and provide a real suprise when ice fishing. Trying to pull a 10lb golden trout through a 6" hole is fun. For me, it's not a very big deal anymore, now that we have much larger trout hanging out in the local streams.

I hear you Dingo. I prefer casting for them in the rivers and streams myself, though I would like to try ice fishing up there this year. We'll see what happens.

Peple, I didn't help release the fish, I was there videotaping the event for a story we did on the news last night.

Here's a few pix...

Those are the most beautiful fish! I have not seen Golden Trout in a long time. I totally agree with Dingo that they should not let anyone just hook them right out of the truck. There is no sport in that whatsoever! How can they allow that? Anyhow, thanks for covering this Carl. Awesome pictures as well. I don't dig this, even is it is a "tradition". It just does not seem right. Ok, sorry for ranting. I just don't get it.

Mat

PS. Thanks again Carl!

wow thast a crowd...How is that fishing? Would this be okay say if it was a deer releas into a fenced in area and the gate was at one spot? Cause thats essentially the same thing...I would really like to see a day or two waiting period for these fish, I mean at least let them drop their parasites from the hatchery ;) ...or go the route of childrens fish derby which always knocks it back a day. Except move the release date back a few so it on a day where kids dont have school. Or better yet...oh god what a novel idea that will unfortunately go no where...do a program and take less fortunate school systems and children and camp them out right after the truck leaves and have them fish it first. See what a profound impact that has on the rest of their lives to see a lake as beautiful as punderson and a fish like a golden trout.

I personally am waiting till the weekend or next week to get out there and hopefully get into one of those beauts....

I talked with the ODNR guy and he said that people catch some of them, but not many. Usually, about 3 or 4 days later, after the fish settle down, they catch more of them.

I only saw two smaller fish caught when I was there, and they weren't very near the release point.

That has been my experience aroudn newly released fish too. The fact is they are in shock from the trip and need time to calm down after just being shout out a tube into a different aqueous environment before they even think of eating or instinctively hitting something. Something I havent noticed in Ohio, with fingerling stockings, that I have seen and heard in other states is the activity from other fish coming to eat the fingerlings. My uncle used to live by Flaming Gorge Res in wyoming, and when they would stock the rainbows the browns had it figured out and there was a while in the 80's when records were falling weekly and monthly becuase these fish were gorging themselves on the newly stocked trout. I guess its just becuase we dont have that fishery here.

their was a guy that was netting them and threw them in the car and took off before someone could say somthing i wish the dnr would of caught them. other people were standing their hooking them in the mouth while the fish were still. and some ret@rd put his boat in the water after they stocked the fish. and killed a couple by running them over. because the fish were in shock they didnt move far.

im gonna make a trip up there and want to thank all the responses.i usually wait a week or so after release. i am still catching at petros with no fishing pressue.still plenty of trout in there....darn weather. if someone wants to go next week sometime let me know ill drive....husk

I went to Punderson after a stocking a year or so ago, but it was closed because of some youth fishing thing (14 and under). Regular fishing opened later in the day.

I'd like to see the DNR stay at the site of the stocking for some time just because of the crap people pull (netting fish, snagging them in the mouth), seems like it should have been more of a priority...people are morons.

With that being said...I never did care for golden trout. Yeah, they're pretty (pretty goofy lookin'), but I much prefer rainbows, but even moreso, I likes Brookies the best of all

Hooking in the mouth is a lot different than snagging as they gulp new water while in shock from the transfer from the truck to the lake. But, there's nothing saying people can't try. If that's their idea of "fishing", well, that's for them to deal with.

i tried their sun not a single fish. punderson is with in 2 miles of my house. their were many other people their and they wernt catching anything ethier. but it was windy

I am coming up there tomorrow...I will be there around noon. I am going to try and find the docks, although, not sure exactly where they are. So Peple of the Perch....come find me! I will be the husky man in a Cleveland browns Jacket....Blue Chrysler Mini Van! See ya at the lake!

i am bussy and wont be able to get their until 4 o clock for the entire week. if i go
