Have never chummed for perch.

 

If their there and not biting, start the engine and let it run. It works also to keep them there sometimes.

 

Never used anything.

 

I used to fish with my uncles and they would sometimes use cat food in a stocking tied to a rope and sometimes use crushed shells saying that the shiny sides would look like shiners in the water. Not sure where they got the shells but they would drop a handful whenever it got slow.

Too much current in Lake/River Erie to chum. The chum floats with the current. In my opinion.

 

That is why my uncles would punch a couple holes in the catfood can and lower it down on a rope to keep it under the boat. If you just dump a can over the side who knows where it settles.

I have occasionally used a plastic minnow bucket insert weighted with a couple rocks. I put some minnows, both live and cut up, in there and drop it to the bottom. I tie it off so that it bounces off the bottom with the wave action. There have been times when I thought it helped, other times the perch just weren't in the mood no matter what I did.

 

This is sort of chumming. A charter captain told me he drops his downrigger ball to the bottom, raises it and drops it a few times to stir up the bottom. It draws bait in to feed on what gets stirred up and perch follow the bait, or just check out what all the commotion is. I drop a heavy ball sinker to the bottom and bounce it several times. It usually works.

 

Many years ago I tried freezing perch guts from my previous perch trips, put in handful of gravel as ballast, in a plastic bag. Drop only frozen chum after removing bag. It occasionally helped attract perch and catfish. The bigger the bag, the bigger the chum ball, the slower it would melt down releasing the fish pieces. You defiantly you could see it attracting a bait ball on fish finder!

This is a useful way to recycle what you usually stink up the neighborhood with until the trash collector picks it up!

 

Halibut fishermen use fish guts in a weighted mesh laundry bags dropped to bottom on a rope.

 

grine up your fish after fileting and put that in freezer in cup.the size it will fit your chum pipe.
make 4" or 6" pipe with cap and put the frozen chum in ad one rock for noice and put that on rope and send that to the botom.you have to drill some holes in pipe to relese chum.

 

Fish attractant paste on the swivel or weight. Panfish or minnow scent. If things slow down, reapply.

 

I have use rice ice fishing and it works.

 

We use clam shells from the Feed store.

 

A 3 or 4 foot piece of heavy chain lowered from the bow just so it raises and lowers off the bottom with the wave action. I also agree with and use the motor running tactic, it seems to help.

I went to a wedding once where the bride was obviously pregnant. All the guests threw puffed rice .

 

I just drop my infamous "fish caller" over the side. Consists of- plastic jug filled with water, rocks, jingle bells and a couple of minnows.
