Pattern Paper Doesn't Lie

I always pattern my shotgun and choke tube combination, before hunting with it and it has always proven to be well worth the time. :) Plus, it's a huge confidence builder in the weapon's ability.

Today, I was using some 12 gauge 3" Winchester Long Beard, 1 3/4 oz. of #6 shot at 1200 fps. The choke tube is a Carlson .665 Non-Ported. My Mossberg 940 with a 24" barrel was very impressive with the patterns at 30, 40 and 50 yards.

Unless I’m missing something here…you don’t have any in the head and brain area at all…which is not good…I would change your point of aim and put the bead at the area where the head joins the neck and re-pattern …too many in the body…not sure where you were aiming…one single pellet in the head will kill a turkey…just my opinion good luck

I agree with you on the point of aim, which needs to be higher. I was aiming at the white circle on the pattern paper, but I may need to make the head my aiming point. (y)

I may re-pattern with more #6s and a higher point of aim and/or try some TSS....if I can find it. I like the pattern density, but the point of aim needs to be a little higher.

Bead sight or rifle sights?
try raising the back sight if possible and aim at the same place.
never tried it but should raise your pattern and you can use the same shells.
I have a florescent green triangular fiber optic on the end of the barrel and nothing but flat rib all the way back. I've had good success with this type of sight for sporting clay events, as long as I get a good cheek weld and keep the rib flat to the fiber optic sight, the pattern hits at the tip of the triangle. 💯

I re-patterned using the same style of target paper, but placed my end sight on the head and not on the white dot that's indicated on the paper. (y) This made all the difference. I purchased another box of the Winchester Long Beard in #5s, because they didn't have any #6s, which is a good thing. In previous years I've used #5s and they have a little more "umpf" for knock down power, yet there's plenty of them in the pattern.

Oddly enough both the 30 yard pattern and the 40 yard pattern had exactly 28 hits in the head/neck area. Enough for a good kill. ☠🦃

If you still have the original full choke tube for it I would give it a try if you don’t have enough time to get a different tube…I’ve been hunting turkey for 50 years and before all of the changes came with patterning many birds have fallen to the full choke…with the season around the corner I don’t know if you have the time to search for the best match for your gun…there are some great products out there to improve your performance but it takes time and money to get the best match for your gun…obviously the Carlson brand you’re using or the ammo don’t match as good as you would like or what you should expect if everything is a good match for your gun…sometimes all you have to do is change the brand of the ammo to get noticeable improvement…I’m sure you’ll get it figured out and good luck this season

The factory choke that was in my Mossberg 500 Turkey Special, is a .670 and it doesn't produce tight patterns, despite it being marked XX-Full. Therefore my reasons for changing to a Cabelas brand Black Max, which is a .660. I may give it a try for patterning.

I also have a Undertaker .665 non-ported, that I'll try, while I'm out there. I'm sure one of these chokes will improve the patterns at 40 yards. :sneaky: I need to start making notes of what choke worked with what ammo and at what distances, etc. :)

Believe me, I'd like to change to another brand, but I'd have to travel some distance to find it. I'm not a fan of Winchester ammo, of any kind. 🚫
I think I can make this stuff work, IF I can find a choke tube that works with it.

I tried the Cabelas brand Black Max 660 choke tube in my Mossberg 940, at 40 yards and was very impressed. I was shooting this pattern off-handed, whereas I had previously been using a tripod, so the pattern is a little left. It's pretty windy today, so I had to find a location that was out of the wind to do my pattern testing.

Just the same, this will certainly kill a turkey at 40 yards and possibly further. However, I've never had to shoot beyond 32 yards. These Black Max choke tubes are only $45 and perform very well out of my Mossberg 500 with its' 20" barrel and Mossberg 940 with its' 24" barrel. (y)

I ran out of targets, so I cut out the head/neck from one of the paper targets above and traced it on some pattern paper. ;)

Perhaps, next year. Nobody carries it around here and I'd have to travel over an hour to find it.
I've seen in priced at $62 to $68 for a box of 10.

I'm liking the patterns that I'm getting with this less expensive stuff, for now.
