Outboard issue...25hp E-tech

I know already that Evinrude is out of business. However, my Dad has a 2021 E-tech that is still under warranty, but he cannot get a shop to correctly diagnose and fix the issue he is having. New gas tank and fuel line last year, for background info.

Motor starts and idles great. Upon running for 10 mins or so will begin to cough, then stall, and won't re-start. Allowing it to sit for 15-20 mins and it'll start up again. Run for a while, stalls out again.

He took it to a marina on Grand Lake and the guys told him there were no codes that showed up, but the fuel tank had the intake in the wrong spot (?) and they said they fixed it. IMO they just told him that to get rid of him. Being fair, they only charged him a couple hundred bucks, and they had his boat for nearly 2 months. He bought a new fuel take and line and has the same problem.

The Google machine/Youtube machine seems to point towards a faulty sensor in the fuel system. However; if that were the case it would be throwing a code, and according to the guys at GLSM there were no codes in the history nor when the engine was running (and stalled) for them.

Dad is 85 and just wants to be able to fish GLSM, Indian, and other reasonably sized bodies of water with a friend or two. The boat is nice, a 165 Alumacraft that he put a bunch of work into to make it fit his needs.

If any of you know of a reputable shop within a couple hours of Lima I would appreciate a name/number. Thanks in advance for any/all replies.

I know its a bit of a ride and its also been a few years since ive taken anything there..........hell, the guy might not even be alive anymore. The shop was on the west side of the drawbridge past Port Clinton. Mark Smith was the owner's name. A good guy that loved to talk, but knew Evinrude's well. As you would figure might be a little wait this time of year.
Worth a shot to get dad on the water, if all else fails
Good luck

There are only 2 types of issues it could be, either spark or fuel. It seems it has to be the fuel since it fires right up.

A friend of mine had a very similar issue. He tried everything; replaced fuel lines, replaced fuel fitters, cleaned carbs, adjusted linkage. Nothing worked. He told me early on that if he disconnected the fuel line from his gas tank and just put the line in a gas can it ran perfectly. I kept telling him the issue was the pick-up tube coming out of his gas tank. There's a screen at the end of the tube and it was probably clogged. After spending 2 weeks of trying everything else, he decided maybe I was right. He tried to remove and replace the tube, but it wouldn't budge so he took a wire and poked some holes in the screen and installed another inline fuel filter. That was it, he took it to the lake, and it ran perfect.
Since the engine is not showing any codes (since its functioning just fine) and the fuel lines have been replaced. I'd look into checking the fuel tank. Even a new tank could have had junk in it causing the screen to clog. If the vent is open and working, I would check the pickup tube. To check it, I would do what my friend did and just insert the fuel line coming from the tank into a gas can. If it runs with no problems, you'll know the issue is with the tank and not the motor.
Good luck with getting it fixed.

Have had the primer bulb check valves stick and cause similar issues. Remove fuel hose at carb, pump primer bulb and see what kind of fuel flow you have. Also have had stuff in fuel line on engine, it seems these new fuels can leave residue in lines, I took all fuel lines apart, filters, fuel pump and blew out. Now for winter I remove line at carb and blow all fuel out of line with air hose.

I have a 30hp etec and found that if the spark plugs aren’t replaced every couple years that it will do this exact thing. Also the spark plugs need to be tightened down so the electrode is aligned so the open end is facing the injector cup. So once replacing where the spark plugs aren’t replaced sets in the head or whatever there is a marking where the injection cup is. Mark the plug where the opened end of the electrode is and try to tighten down so it is aligned within 180 degrees of the injector cup. You can look this up under spark plug alignment for evinrude etec 25hp. I’ve also had issues with overheating before with their garbage impellers that they installed so I do that as well every 2yrs. I use my motor for trolling primarily. The champion plugs are copper ones which cool down faster to prevent pre ignition. Hope this helps

If the low pressure fuel lift pump or regular fuel pump is seizing after it heats up there won't be a code, the 25hp etec are notorious for the fuel pump doing that, running for 10-20mins and locking up. After sitting they cool off and start working again. Run the engine till it cuts out and pull the fuel line off and try to start it again and see if the pump is putting fuel out to determine this.

You've got to take the fuel line off the tank and run with an auxilary tank. With your new fuel lines that will tell you whether it is fuel system issue or the tank now. You should be able to take the cowling off and view the internal fuel filter to see if bubbles appear during running or if becomes air only. That is another fuel system test you need to do. If those tests prove not a fuel issue, then could be ignition or electrical.

BTW the fellow mentioned earlier in Port Clinton, Mark Smith, he is the best Johnson/ Evinrude mechanic around. He is still in business but semi retired. I just had my 2004 115 Johnson tuned up and it runs like new. Rebuilt the carbs and needed new ignition coil. Was running on 3 cylinders most of the time for last season and a few months. Runs like a champ now. Reminds me I have to call him and thank Mark. His number is (419) 734-2224. Let him know I recommended him please. Others on this site recommended him to me 18 years ago when I got my first Johnson boat. Never a bad experience. He will tell you everything you ever want to know about your motor.

Let us know how it goes,
Rick Pichola

Update...

Dad has his Etech/boat at a dealership in Hamilton Indiana (bout 90 miles from him). They tested and tested and tested and came to the solution that they believe it is a fuel pump issue. New part ordered, we shall see if that fixes the problem.

Funny story...the tech must not have believed Dad when he told him it would stall out after 15-20 minutes. Poor guy got stuck out in the middle of the lake....:)
