Oshay frustration

Last night I fished Oshay, below the spillway for saugeyes. I gave up a few grubs and a ...*sigh*....vibe e to the river :( I gets very frustrating....

I guess I don't know how to fish this area. There always like 20 people down there fishing with bobbers, etc. I have never seen any of them leave with anything but dink catfish.

I caught a nice channel and a nice SM there a week or so ago, but I really want to pull some "eyes" out of there.

Anyone have any tips on what to use for eyes below oshay? I was told to use twister tail grubs for saugeyes, but it seems I just end up losing them there. I really want to find a good tactic for saugeye there because I live so close to there.

Thanks for any help for super rocky area, saugeye fishing.

although I only fish soft plastics there bc I have lost so many lures in the past, if money was no object, I would be fishing

1. lucky craft pointer 100 (probably the deep diver which goes to about 7 feet instead of 5)

or a husky jerk deep diver size 12 or 14.

The only reason I say deep diver is bc I'm guessing it is DEEP. The regular versions would probably work too just not as good. ANd you may even need to add split shots to get them to go deeper.

THe large eyes like long skinny (or not)lures.

I would also try a rapala 13 (or similar this morning I got a nice 20" eye on a a.c. shiner 450)rigged with a tri swivel and weight. Experimenting with different depths down to bouncing bottom.

THat sounds like fun if money was no object.

Actually there are a lot of possibilities. Suspending is good, too, sometimes they hit during the pause. Since most fish twistertails, you will be at an advantage also.

edit: instead of split shots add lead plumbers tape (or suspend dots) to suspecting jerkbaits to get them to run deeper. Tape placement (so they suspend horizontally) may be tricky.

I just thought of a couple more.

Rapala Countdown Size 11. Color Gold or Perch.

Large (1/2-3/4 oz probably bigger) Rattle Traps (color largemouth bass)

Try starting deep, wouldn't it be sweet to get one on the fall?!?!?!

Or Spoons like little cleos (color firetiger or perch), kastmasters, or generic. But the heavier ones that get down quicker sooner would probably work best (especially if the water is flowing good).

just some more ideas

Actually though there are few Saugeyes down below O'Shay right now, as soon as the water cools down a bit more there will be more there. I pulled 225 out of there last year from late Oct thru Mid Feb. The ONLY thing I use there are Smithwick Rouges (SUSPENDING), Rapala size 11, 12, & 14's again (SUSPENDING ONLY).

If you are going to jig fish there then you need to throw 1/16 oz and even sometime 1/32 oz jigs tipped with a 2 or 3 inch chartruese or white curlytail.

Just be patient, they will come when it gets a little bit chillyer.

:D

You got a 5lber? How long was it man. Not one of my fish last year weighed 5 lb's.

Harry, You ever got a 5lb'er out'a there either?

That's a heck of a fish for there man. You got any pics? I'd love to see that one. ;)

Crawdiddy, I certainly hope there are more people down there. I get lonely and scared. I usually don't go down there until after 9 p.m. since Eye's are primarily night feeders.

I know the Mexicans won't be there after sunset, and the cool night keeps the Vietnamese away because they are used to 105 degrees all the time.

So, at night, it's just me and my 14 friends. 13 in the clip and 1 in the chamber. (Glock) :p

"I know the Mexicans won't be there after sunset, and the cool night keeps the Vietnamese away because they are used to 105 degrees all the time."

Interesting comment...Please explain b/c it sounds racially intolerant.

What are the Mexicans and Vietnamese doing to you? I fish down there all the time with all races and no one has ever gone so far as to look at me...I've never heard of any violence down there.

As for the fishing below OShay - step it up to some 10 cm jerkbaits in January for some big eyes...

I am not an avid poster on this site and I am not a "lurker" looking for honey holes and the quick fix. I am an avid bass fisherman who decides where I'm going well in advance regardless of what I read here. That being said, I couldn't sit idly by and let that last race comment pass without saying something. That is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. Do Asians commit crimes? Yes. Do Latinos commit crimes? Yes. Do African Americans commit crimes? Yes. Do Caucasians commit crimes? Yes. The bottom line is that regardless of race, people commit crimes. I can't believe that blatant racism is tolerated on this board. In my profession I work with a number of minorities who are outstanding people. In my fishing club we have minorities who are outstanding people. In my profession and my club, we have white people who are outright jerks. I guess all I am saying is that whoever monitors this board needs to take some action to get ignorant people off the site. Sorry for the rant.

I guess I'll have to explain. I was NOT degrading ANYONE. Simply making a statement. If you guys fish there all the time then you would see that the ONLY people that fish 4 to 7 rods are the latinos and the Asians. ( I am married to a Latino) I am NOT predijuce at all to anyone, race or creed.
I simply am making a statement that because of all the RODS there are as many BOBBERS floating in and around the "pool" below O'Shay. Makes it kinda hard, real hard to cast your jigs or rouges or any stickbait down there when there are 7 or 8 "people", (did that offend you?) down there with 4-7 rods EACH. I have called ODNR several times and when they are in the "area" they came down and made 3 arrests and confiscated several poles and nets.

Thats right, CASTING NETS. Keeping the fish that are caught in the "CASTING NETS" in their buckets. The fish being caught with nets are ALL released. Not knowing which ones they were, the ODNR man dumped ALL of them back in. This happened 2 times that I called them.

It just happens that on 1 occasion it was Latinos, on the other 3 occasions it was Asians. There was one family of Asians that was there with 17 RODS in the water at one time. ODNR confiscated them. As a matter of fact, he drove up from Riverside Dr. ODNR office right after I called them. I had absolutely no place to fish because they had the whole place cordoned off with their line and 3" BOBBERS. I know that they did that so you couldn't fish the area.

I guess you never heard of the 3 cars that were vandalized down there while the guys fished at midnight last year? I guess you never heard of the 2 guys that were held up down there 2 years ago? I guess you don't believe that there were any other problems in the parking lot up top when 2 guys walked up the hill at 2 a.m. after fishing and were robbed?

Check with Delaware Cty Sherriff Dept roster and you will see what goes on down there that doesn't make the papers amigo.

You see, I fish below the dam 3 to 4 night a week and I see what goes on there from Oct to March, when the Eye's are supposed to be turned on and guys fish there at night.

Any more acusations of me being predudice? I will take an apology anytime you are ready. Thank you.

Trucked,

Which one is it? First your lonely and want more people down there. And then you are complaining about too many people. Do you want caucasians down there with you after dark or does it matter?

The statement about Mexicans and Filipinos followed by the statement about you and your 14 pals sounded very insinuating.

" I am NOT predijuce at all to anyone, race or creed. " - but you are to Dog Chapman and his wife without ever meeting them - lol.

Frankly, the last place you will find me is below the dam while you are there with your 14 buddies - "one in the chamber".

I was talking about the people that fish with all kinds of rods and BREAK THE RULES that we should follow. I was talking about people that have no respect for their "FELLOW FISHERMAN". I have watched people not touch certain rods that were casted and placed so that nobody could fish an area just so they could fish a particular spot. It's not my fault that these people were Asains. What? I can't say that here. I'm am offending someone? I don't believe it.

As far as me complaining about too many people down there. That only happens during the day on the weekends usually? NOT. I was just down there and fishing off the square cement platforn alone and an Asain fellow comes over from by the dam and goes on the cement pile and CASTS TO HIS LEFT RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. He looks at me and then puts the rod down and casts another 3 rods out in front of him. I asked him to move the one in front of me since i WAS THERE FOR AN HOUR ALREADY AND SO WAS HE (BY THE DAM) hE SAID NO. tHAT WAS SO I DIDN'T INTERFERE WITH HIS FLOATS.

Well, being the nice & easy going guy that I am, I packed up my stuff and left. Now, if I was predjudice I would've more than that.

Also, ask anyone on here about me and they'll tell you that I am NOT a mean, disrespectful, predjudice person. Not at all.

Yeah I will get the picture developed of the saugeye sometime soon...still have 15 more pictures on the roll to take. I thought I had a nice smallie at first until I got it in a little closer but I could tell it was a nice fish as soon as I set the hook. It was my personal best saugeye, only second to the 3.5lb one I caught at Indian lake in the midwest bass tournament lol. I might have to start taking up saugeye fishing.

what if I had said there were a bunch of Irish men or a bunch of Swedes or Englishmen or whatever. Would that be racist too? I don't think so. I think the persons that are interperting it are the racists for even thinking like that.

I was just stating the ethnic background of the people. I was not calling them any names at all.

Frankly I think anyone that talks about going places armed with a glock loaded with 14 rounds and "one in the chamber" is a little far from a class act.

Sounds like a gangsta to me...

:T :T :D :D :T

I have never fished there but I fish a similar place. The trick is to place your bait or lure in tuff places. I use a 7’ to 8.5’ rod for long cast. I also use a heavy sliding bobber to help get distance. What I do different is use two bobber stops/beads. I use one below the bobber and one above the bobber. Space them enough that you can jig the bait in place (about a foot apart). With this system you can keep your bait off bottom and avoid snags and still be able to fish hard-to-reach areas. I also use a swivel and tie jigs to one foot leader with a loop at the top. I use this rig to get at smallmouth, carp, cats and anything that’s out there. The bait on the jig has to be something that will stay on and attract what you are fishing for. I use Gulp grubs or white tubes for bass. Dough balls for carp and hotdogs for cats. I would try a Gulp grub for saugeyes. Once you use this rig you will think of all kinds of places you can use it . Good Luck!

first issue: 5lber. i've seen no 5lbers down there, but i have and caught some, even larger ones, below griggs dam. it certainly would be possible to catch one down there, just not likely. the area is more consistant than griggs for nos. of fish.
second issue: 3rd worlders are drawn to this area because of its ease of entry and it's ability to hold fish. not only asia and mexicans go there, but i've met many other
nationalities. the most reacent a russian. the problem arises because these people treat fishing differently in their home countries than we do. they are acting like they are home. they will come right up on you, right where you are fishing, under your elbow, literley. on the most part, it's because they are engaging in an activity that, in their country, it's a social event. everyone goes to the river, the whole family. and when you get there, there are a ton of people, and their familys. remember where they come from it's crowded.
3rd issue: steve is a good man. he has to be or his wife would kill him. if you meet his daughter the lump around her little finger is steve. all in all he's ok.

I have a license to carry and it happens to be Federal. I have had it for 16 years now. Can you get a FEDERAL carry permit? Have you fished down below the dams in this area between midnight and daylight consistently?

You would see a different world man. A completely different world.

Senairio!!!!!
You're down below a dam, 200 yards away from your car or anything for that matter and 1-2-3 guys walk up to you and tell you that you need to give them all your money and your equipment and YOUR KEYS big boy. Now they got your wallet and your keys and know where you live and go there while your stuck there and do all kinds of things to your family too.

WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO NOW. CRY????

FYI, I carry when I go to Kroger too. Does that make me a bad person. Matter of fact the only time I don't carry is when I am on my Ranger boat.

THANK YOU MIKE FOR THE BACK UP. You ready to go fishin? Tell me when man, tell me when. We could do Indian Lakes or Alum at night and try for some Eye's. We'll figure it out.

Later people. :)

you can come too if you can find the time. Thursday I have to go somewhere and Friday I have Therapy and have to be back in time to pick Lily up from school at 2:45. Soooo, that said, figure out when you guys want to go and we will go. Saturday is supposed to be raining. Let's see what it looks like.
Later girls,

Used to fish O'Shay below the dam alot at night for eyes and there were plenty of nights when I would of felt more comfortable down there knowing a law abiding citizen who had been trained in "concealed carry" was packing. It can get uncomforable down there.
Also, have caught a couple eyes down there that I'm pretty sure were over 5. Didn't wiegh them but one was 24.5" and the other was 25".

Couldn't have said it any better myself ;)...BTW Steve and I go way back to the "good ol' days" of GFO and hot Eye fishing below Griggs...It was Steve who first turned me on to the now defunct GFO forums (which eventually led to the creation of OGF).

Hopefully those days will return if the we don't get more massive floods and anglers voluntarily return some of them eye's back to the river .

I will attest that Steve is a good guy..who's willing to lend a helping hand to any angler (not to be confused with meat hunter) out there ;)
