For transport, it's hard to beat them. Seen quite a few good finishes ruined from long term storage though. Your '97 and early 60's 870 would be right at home getting packed around in one of those.

 

Couple pages on Ebay. As mentioned, condition is everything. No idea what you have, but some go for hundreds. Shipping might be a killer. Couple shippers, can't recall which, really jacked up rates on longer length items.

There are more guns ruined from storage in plastic/ vinyl cases than leather of fabric. The leather/ fabric cases allow the air to circulate. Plastic/ vinyl can be air proof and will promote condensation with temperature changes.
As with all items to be shipped at today’s costs, it is prudent to understand price + shipping. Some things just don’t make sense because of shipping. I have looked on eBay for holsters and the shipping has run me off. Might as well
buy new if it’s common every day type stuff.

 

Here is how to really wreck a gun, a first year early production 617 in a foam lined plastic gun case left in closet in humidity. My nephews gun at the time but I bought it from afterwards. The last picture is the finished although the heavy rust pittings will never be gone but its a great shooter. I currently have a Nikon 2x scope on it currently. I tried for awhile to get a replacement rear sight assembly but gave up on it and installed a EGW mount since the gun value was ruined by the carelessness.

 

A local passed away and his son ask me if I would buy or sell small collection. Son drives past my house every day. Long story short took him about 3 yrs to get around to bringing them up. He wasn’t happy, had bought those $20 Wally World hard cases with egg carton foam. 5 of these with the nicest long guns. Browning Sweet 16, Citori, REM 870 Winchester M70 and REM 700v. These guns bottom side were rusted so bad that pieces of the foam came with the gun. Top side looked perfect. There were 6 more guns in soft cases that only had a little spotty fine surface rust. Needless to say it affected worth tremendously. He didn’t get for the whole lot what the two Brownings would have brought how his dad had left them. It didn’t help that guns were stored in basement all that time.
