Offshore OR-12 question?

Any idea if you can adjust the tension on the snaps/releases? I could not keep these things on my Power Pro #30 line yesterday. I had them about 30-40 feet from the boat on both sides. Waves 1 - 3 foot. I even tried wrapping the line a few times around my finger and then attached it to releases. I was running RR deep divers at 60 back. Any idea why they wouldn't stay on my line. I even found someone elses floating around. Too say the least I wasn't impressed and I got :S using them.

Thanks,
Andrew

If you are using the stock OR-14 releases that came with the boards, remove them and pitch them in the garbage with the rest of your trash. Replace them with the OR-18 snapper releases. These are adjustable and cannot accidently fall off. They are available on line or at Gander for about $12 each.

IMO the OR-18 should be standard equipment on the Offshore boards from the factory. I could never understand why they would sell a product that does not perform properly without an expensive upgrade.

I upgraded to the 18 and love them. No problems at all. If I remember correctly there is a spring inside the other release that can be moved back and forth to create different tensions. Still not enough with superlines though, you will still have to wrap them.

If you want your boards to "pop" and slide back when bringing in a fish you also could consider the orange heavy clips. Not sure on the number. I prefer to pop mine, and the OR-18 would fray my line after many fish at one setting. I just switched to the orange one's this year and only had them in the water for a couple hours at Turtle Creek. Will post more after some more trips with them. If you want it to stay clamped, definately go with the 18's.

as others said, upgrade to the or-18 clips, wrap the super line once around and clip it towards you.(put the line thru the jaw, wrap it around the bottom and thru the jaw again) (heres my secret.lol. run 30# mono) no need for any leader or extra wrapping, i see no reason the run super line when pulling boards. just drop out your lure to the correct depth and clip it in the jaw. im not even running a swivel with this set-up, just a duo-lock snap. this is for night trolling. daytime i might go lighter on the pound test and put a swivel in somewhere.

Get the OR-18 Snapper Release, I use both braid and mono and have never lost a board trolling anything even snap weights up to 6 oz with deep diving cranks, I use 40/10 power pro and 10 pound mono, I have the tention screw pretty tight and no need to even wrap the braided line just put it in and snap it closed I use the OR-16 red release with the pin for the release on the back of the board. www.franksgreatoutdoors.com sells the snappe releases for 9.99, best price I have found anywhere. great source for cranks and blades too, great prices on everything.

OSU,
It depends on what you want the board to do when you get a fish. If you want the board to stay attached right to the braid without sliding than use the or-18 or the church releases, if you want the board to slide down the line, ( which is how I use them ) than the orange or-16 should be fine. But you can't set it up to slide down your line with braid unless you figure the minimum amount of braid you'll have out in the water and then tie that to mono, then you can let all the braid out and some mono if you need longer lead, and attach the board on the mono. When the fish hits the board releases on the front clip and slides down on the snap that is on the rear of the board. If you use this tie about a 6 foot leader on with a swivel and put a clear bead before the swivel so the board doesn't slide all the way down to the fish.

Thanks guys for the responces.... All of my trolling rods are set up with braided line, so I'll just go with the OR-18 instead of the slide method...That seems like alot of work, but I could see not losing as many fish that way...Time to spend more dough and upgrade my brand new boards...!@

Thanks,
Andrew

Because they can get "saps" like me to pay $12 bucks for the little piece of plastic to make 'em usable!!!!:p

I have 2 OR-12 boards set up with OR-18 and OR-16 clips and 2 Church's Walleye Boards. I'm finding that I much prefer the Church's. You can get the Church walleye boards for 19.99 at walleyesinc, which is about the the same price as an OR-18 clip and set of 2 OR-16 clips.

The Church boards are much easier to put on, much easier to take off, and if you double wrap the front clip (like most people do on the OR-18 anyways), they don't come off.

30 bucks for an OR-12 + 10-15 bucks for an OR-18 + 5 bucks per OR-16,a nd y ou are looking at 50 bucks invested per Offshore board. These days I don't see how someone can't strongly consider Church's. Especially when you can get a 4-pack of them for $74 at walleyesinc.

Make sure you get the Church's walleye board, it's a little bigger than the other Church boards. It also has an adjustable ballast weight, so you can make them run smooth in rough water or with heavier loads. We used Church's walleye boards at last years Hawgfest in 3-5 foot waves. We didn't have any boards slip or come off in those conditions.

I'm strongly considering getting 2 more Church's boards and putting my OR-12 up for sale in the market place.

K Gone... I wish you wouldn't of told me about Frank's Great Outdoors...I'm a sucker for online shopping, especially during the lunch break with a big fat sandwich in my hand...It's stored in my favorites:p

yeah that's what the last 3 guys said who I gave the link too:p . Great Store that's for sure, they will send you a nice catalog as well just to add to the madness.

Franks is a good place...I make sure to hit their booth at the Birch Run show every year in March.

I will echo what Commodore64 said...save your money and time and buy Church boards...

No need for a release upgrade. The pin at the back is NICE...not to mention you can move the lead forward and back to adjust to what you are pulling to keep the planing surface in the water and allow the board to track out to the side more effectively.

Oh COmmodore, opening up a can of worms. lol. I agree with you though. Had nothing better to do last winter so I made my own. Ezbite was good enough to send me his discarded church clips. And with what I had in my garage and about 2 bucks in 3/4 by 1/4 by 4'' steel plates for ballast, I knocked off a couple. Worked so well, I made a couple more. Maybe not the best but they work fine. I can even alter the tow point further forward or backward. Back for slower speed and forward for higher speed.

Heh, listen, I own 3 OR-12 boards. I've got a lot invested in them, so I really want to like them. But after using Rugged Seahorse's Church boards last year at the Hawgfest, and this year at the Turtle Creek Fest...I can honestly say that I like the Church's better.

And they are less than HALF the price of OR-12 by the time you kit out an OR-12 board with OR-18 and 16 clamps.

Triple-j: I'm missing something in your explanation. I've been fishing the slide method for a while and have always put the clips(OR-18) right on the braid. Why all the extra rigging your doing? The only issue I've had is the line getting frayed after many releases at the exact same point. I'm giving the orange ones another try this weekend off 72nd.

For those looking at the Church Boards, my brother has them and loves them. I've already sunk the cash into my Offshores, so I'm not switching now, but if I were to start over I'd strongly consider the Churches.

Hitting the lottery, twice, helps keep the cost down too.
