Haven't seen one first hand but it's a Shimano, so good enough for me!

 

Picked two up on sale last season. They are the smoothest linecounter reels I’ve ever had in my hands. Really recommend them highly.

I think you bought the older version which are great by the way. The new ones are only starting to ship now

 

Wow the 500’s have a 38” line per crank and is smaller that last yrs. I seen they are all black now and even easier to palm. Nice!

 

They were the newest version at the time I got them last season. How can I have the newest if the new ones weren’t released til now? Haha. I like the ones I have now.

maybe the new ones started showing up in the fall at some locations. the older ones was very hard to find by mid summer.

No. They are the original version. I've got 20 of them and they're great reels.

Well, I received my two new Tekota A's. Haven't used them yet but here is my comparison.
* spool size and capacity is the same
* clicker is somewhat loader
* it is clearly faster. Should be better for clearing lines and boards and for fast running fish like salmon. Not sure about hard pulling musky baits etc
* overall size. Only a quarter inch lower and its actually a little wider than old version. They look a lot smaller but i measured them
* the handle is actually a lot longer. I don't think these will free up much space if any in the rod locker.
* The numbers on the line counter are much smaller. They are harder to see than the original version for sure.

Looks like they really had to put the handle out there and make it longer to get that huge gear ratio. Let us know how they do. I love my Pre A’s. Best investment I made since my boat purchase.

One additional observation. If you are a musky troller and use down easters rod holders (most mostly fisherman do) the new tekota hangs up in a few spots.
* One is if the real is seated back in the holder the line roller guide will jam on rod holder

If the reel is seated all the way forward the rod holder can dig into the spool of line when the spool is full.
