Hello yall, I have been skunked so many times in a row it's sad. Anyone in the area have any advice on a close spot to fish?

I have also been out in the river a bunch of times. Just looking for something close to home for a little weekend action.

Thanks fellas.

Wallace is great after they stock it in mid December with trout. Use little rapalas, spoons, rooster tails, jig tipped with maggots under a bobber, power bait, corn, cheese, red worms, all work. Much easier to target than steelhead if you are new to it and more 'fun fishing'. Last time I fished Coe was about 6 years ago. I've heard bass are good in spring and summer but not sure on this late in fall. If you're going to fish Coe, I'd try to find deep water and work your baits SLOW. Maybe get into some crappie or panfish with jigs tipped with maggots or waxworms under a float. Other than that, normally this time of year you can cast big rapalas from shore on Erie and catch walleye but heard this year the water temps have kept them deep. If you're willing to travel, there are better lakes within an hour that offer some good opportunities from shore this time of year for multi species. Good luck!

And now that I think of it, I have seen pictures of MONSTER (20-40lb+) catfish from Wallace lake. I've even confirmed this with the local DNR officer. I've always wanted to try but never have. If that interests you, target the deep channel behind the old snack shop and use half a cut bluegill or the biggest dead bait and wait. May not get a lot of action but if you get a taker, better hang on! I'd give this a shot though in the early summer at low light though but catfish bite all year, even through the ice

Thanks for thorough reply.

Last few times out I've pulled rooster tails, crankbaits, and other lures slowly. I've also had maggots, worms, minnows under a float.

I've had all types of stinky bait, both live and dead sitting at the bottom.

And no bites.

I have had a lot of luck at wallace and have seen some of those big cats. Mostly pulled out smaller bullhead. Biggest one was a channel probably around 2 ft. That was this summer.

I want to catch some river fish for sure, but I'll wait till the water comes up.

What other lakes do you recommend for some good cold weather shore fishing? Only other close lakes I've tried are recently are lake medina and Erie at edgewater.

They haven't stocked Wallace yet so that's probably why you haven't been successful recently. Cold weather close to you, it's really hard to beat steelhead on the Rocky. It's addicting. If you want more info and some good spots, techniques, starter gear to get, etc. Let me know and I'll get you some good info to get you hooked up. A lot of the good cold water lakes from shore are going to be east starting with West Branch. Can catch muskie, crappie, walleye off the rocks by the dam

I know I need to get back to the river, I've been out 4 time of so this fall at different spots. I usually take at least on of the kids with me and they are not at all interested in river fishing. I do plan on heading out this weekend to fish the river at some point though.

Can you recommend a good night spot off the shore on Erie? I have been wanting to fish near where the Rocky meets the lake but i want to make sure I don't trespass and I'm not in sketchy spot. This would be with out the kids of course.

Well, what are you trying to fish for? Walleye? Steelhead? Anything that swims? If you're fishing at night, this time of year, your best bet is walleye. During the day, you can cast spoons and shiners under a float for steelhead off 55th, 72nd and wildwood marina (all within 15-20 min from rocky river. For night walleye, wait for a north/west wind that will give the lake some chop. I've had my best nights casting when the waves are 2-3 and even 4-5ft. When it's flat, the bait is just too thick and you're honestly just killing time. Throw rapala husky jerks size 14 in clown, firetiger, blue/chrome w/ orange belly and black and gold. Fish it slow and steady. I'm talking painfully slow. My best night for walleye have been at 72nd on the 'little horse shoe' at the end. It's a rock/concrete platform the U's out from the bridge. Can't miss it. But the whole area produces fish on a good night. Fish have been out deep last I heard but with the cooler temps setting in now, you may be in for a treat. I wouldn't bother with other warm water species right now. PM me if you have any more questions. Happy to help
