Fished mosquito last night with my son. North side, off the causeway a little to avoid the crowds and the 'scavengers' who like to run up to you and beg for a handout if you catch one rather than throw a line in the water and fend for themselves...anywho, everyone was catching crappie, on either side of us guys were loading up. We were only throwing out about 20-25 yds. Bobber and hook about 12" below it, reeling it in extra slow. Catching about every other cast...good time to fill the freezer with delicious crappie! and...until the govt. comes out with "fish stamps", keep telling the 'scavengers' you'd rather teach them to fish, than give them one :D

This reminds me of a time about 17 years ago, when the spillway at Mosquito was a treasure trove of fish -- if you knew how to catch them. Anyways, while I was fishing, this elderly couple was fishing for food to eat, but not catching anything. It felt so good to go home that day, knowing that couple were not going to go hungry thanks to all the crappie, 'Gills, walleye, and smallmouths I caught and gave to them. They left with a bucket full. They were so appreciative and gracious.

By the way, anyone else remember the spillway glory days? The only pike of my lifetime, a 30"er I caught from there.

actually, ez bite my son and i did give away all the fish we caught to a couple that wasnt having as much luck as we were, but they were trying, thats my point. the scavengers i am talking about are the ones that just sit and loiter on the causeway, downing beer after beer and running up to you if they see you have fish. they could spend that beer money on a rod and reel and try catching for themselves. they have run up on so many occassions and actually scared my kids that we try to steer clear of the causeway. i am all for helping those who are helping themselves as we did when we gave away all our fish that day.
