Can anyone give me a lead for a “How To” on a timing belt replacement on my 2016 pro-kicker? I am pretty handy with a wrench but would like to know what I am getting into before I start. Thanks!

I have access to the proper manual from my friend. I can pick it up & review the procedure. Should be able to put the flywheel on TDC & have a corresponding mark align on the camshaft sprocket. I'm not sure if there is an idler pulley or a spring loaded tensioner to adjust the belt. PM me a cell # so we can talk + text you a couple of reference pics. I get the information around for you by tomorrow morning. Mike

Thanks Mike! That would be a great help. I poked around a bit on the internet and found a site that said you need a flywheel puller and it gave the Merc part number. For giggles I looked up the price. $900! Yes $900 just for the puller

Hi Mike, Were you able to put your hands on any information/ diagrams for me? I did PM you my cell-phone number. The info Basshunter sent put me on track but any additional info would be great! I thought I had a flywheel puller but cannot find it so have one coming from Amazon. Hope to get to the job over the week-end. Thks, Joe

Although I bought my boat new in 2016, turns out the 9.9 kicker is a 2015. So same vintage as yours.

So, I am getting a steady high pitched squeal or whine. Kind of comes and goes but is there most if the time. At first I thought it was an alternator bearing or idler bearing. BUT that motor does not have an alternator or idler. So next idea was the timing belt - since belts can squeal. Inspection of the belt shows it still has all it's teeth and looks "okay" but it has a fair bit of play. I don't know how much play is too much so I also looked up PM intervals for marine timing belts and they vary but seemed like about 7 years was about it. And my kicker is 10 years old and gets a lot of use. Also I know on car engines, part of the routine maintenance schedule on timing belts is somewhere around 100,000 miles...

And a broken timing belt is a catastrophic failure - which I would like to avoid.

A stich in time saves nine? Hope this helps!

Is it possible that the sound could be coming from the drive shaft on your motor. I actually have that problem with my 115 four-stroke. There is a brass bushing that the drive shaft goes through. I actually had to install a grease zerk in that bushing to stop my motor from sqealing. Give it a shot of grease a couple times a year. You might try putting some oil on the drive shaft so it runs down into that bushing just to see if the squealing stops.

Many thanks to FiremanMike2427 & 1Basshunter! Got the new timing belt installed. It was pretty easy. Only hiccup was the belt I ordered from Amazon turned out to be a knockoff so I returned it & got an OEM belt.
Here is what I learned:
  1. You dont need the Mercury Flywheel Puller. A strap wrench to hold the flywheel while you remove and retorque the flywheel nut works just fine (thanks Firemanmike).
  2. An Harmonic balance puller (but you need metric bolts) will crack the flywheel off the shaft.
  3. When installing the new belt, put a socket on the crankshaft nut and rotate the crankshaft while pushing the timing belt onto the driven gear with your fingers.
  4. Make SURE your timing marks on the crankshaft and and driven gear are aligned.

Ha! Good question. Had it out yesterday. Motor ran fine trolling for about 6 hours but the harmonic whine is still there. Obviously the timing belt is not the source of the noise. But it was time to replace the belt. And we got a 2 man limit. Mostly smaller fish but 2x27” fish & 1 x 25”. So a good day.
