wipe a little oil on the piston shaft, see if it goes away. just a though.

One thing I found says “Possibly a bad bearing in the tilt motor? Try disconnecting the motor from the tilt mechanism if possible then operate the motor. If it makes noise but less of it, it will be because it is no longer under load.”

Hey Josh, let me try that. I disconnected the tilt unit and was able to tilt the motor up & down by hand with no problem but never thought to run the tilt unit itself under load vs no-load. Thks! Joe

Hi Rob, not found anything yet. Still looking. 252 pm’d me to check ground connections. Said that fixed his but it did not fix mine. Bountyhunter suggested some hydraulic fluid on the piston shaft. Tried that too. I will keep looking. Let me know if you find anything. Joe

I talked to the ‘Certified Merc Tech’ at the Avon Cabelas. He said: “It should not be doing that & to bring it in”. It is still under warranty so thats what I will do & then I will report back.

Probably - but the whole tilt unit was replaced under warantee 6 months ago. It would just quit at random times. At the top, fully extended, half way down.... Should have gone Yamaha?

 

Often when working unit up/down and laying your hands on different components, you can get a better sense of what component/part is making the noise through vibration. Sometimes that will give you a better idea of where to start looking whether it be in the cylinder, pump or even a line that's coming loose inside causing a 'flapper' affect creating noise.

 

Relay's would cause the intermittent but the squealing is definitely pump related. Plugged line, Wrong hydraulic, etc.
