On Saturday, four of us caught 120 perch in three hours, about three miles due north of Little Cedar point. No other boats nearby. Good size fish, little junk, few throwbacks. We limited there last Saturday, too, but it took longer.

Monday: Same four old guys (combined age 288!) fished the same spot with the same result ... another 120 perch. (See my post below.) This time it took over five hours, as we had a slower bite and more sorting. Still, it's the best perchin' we've had in years.

Nice job on the perch.

nice job, where is the closest ramp?
Closest ramp is either Meinkes West or the Lucas county ramp, both on Cooley Canal. Go out the channel and Little Cedar Point is the point of land that sticks out just to your left(west) . I'd use the ramp at Meinkes, it's a better ramp.

We dock at Meinke's and have used thier ramp. It is better thatn the public one but they charge $5 for boats under 25 or 30' can't remember which. Depending on where you are coming from there is a public ramp at Cullen Park
which is in Point Place (Toledo) and is close to the same distance from LCP as Meinke's. Have a lot of friends who use this ramp and have never heard them complain about it.

Thurs, Aug 19 -- another day, another limit. Same guys, same spot (see my posts below). That's 480 perch in four trips. This time, for some reason, we caught a whole lot of fish over nine inches but not a single ten-incher, which is our money fish.

And a big thanks to Iskater for posting about Kahle hooks. Tried some #4s on my homemade crappie rigs today. Out of about 50 fish caught -- including sheepshead, which instantly swallow anything -- only one fish, a throwback perch, was deep-hooked. All the rest were hooked in the lips or mouth. That's a huge improvement.

Glad the Kahles worked for you Jim. They aren't that easy to find anymore but worth looking for IMO. I guess I should get my boat back to Meinkes. We fished A can yesterday but got into a lot of baby white bass and throwbacks. Had some 10 inchers but size was down a bit. Wanted to try North of Island but a little too breezy. Thanks for the report.

About a hour after you two left the perch really turned on ,those little Whitebass are cute ,,they must have had a good spawn this year I did not know the made them that small,,,most boats left A can before they started to bite ,,I will admit it sucked for the first 3 hours

I found Kahle hooks at Gander Mountain. They're Eagle Claw "Lazer Sharp" brand.

A further note on where we've been fishing. As stated, we're ABOUT three miles north of Little Cedar, which puts you a couple miles east and slightly north of Toledo Harbor Light. If you imagine a line through Harbor Light and Consumers Power (Erie, Mich), we are north of that line. We made a brief first stop south of the line yesterday and caught only a few small fish.

And ... maybe ... a clue: The mud that comes up with the anchor where we've been doing well is filled with shells. Snails, I think. The mud a bit farther south is "clean." When we were cleaning fish yesterday, I did not think to examine stomach contents. Next time.

LOL Story of my life Roger! Shoulda been here yesterday, shoulda went this afternoon... My dog is almost 12 and I hate to leave her too long and those cute white bass were getting annoying. Glad they turned on for you. Norm I use #4 Kahles but my buddy uses 2.Also try #1 Octopus hooks by Gamagatsu (misspelled) in red or pink if you can't find Kahles. And Jim you are on a snail bed, they are always a good place to perch. I think Eagle Claw is the only maker of Kahles.

Boo hoo. On Friday our favorite perchin' spot (see my earlier posts) let us down, yielding only 70 fish. We had no shiners, and there was lots of algae. Still, for August that's five trips and 550 good perch. No complaints about that.
