line counting reels question

When I started trolling I made the same error that most make, I went cheap just to get started. Now that I have been doing this for a while I want to get smart about my selection of equipment.

First I will never buy another Cabelas depthmaster. I have a few okuma magda reels that I have heard some negitive complaints about but even though they are cheap I haven't had any issues like I have with the depthmasters. Now my question is whats the difference and what is the wise choose for the weekend worrior fishermen.

Diawa Accudepth $60-$100
Sealine $110-$130
is the sealine worth the difference in price

Okuma Convector $90-$100
Cold Water $110-$120
same question as above

And between the diawa and okuma where would you put your money

I use the daiwa accudepth plus adp17lc and the sealine sg17lca reels and they both have been great reels. I also have some okume convector 20 reels but I haven't used them enough to give you a good reference on them. I use the daiwa reels all the time. but the convectors have worked good what little I've used them. if you have the money I would recommend the daiwa sealines.

So it appears that no matter what reel I get, go with the higher end model. I wonder if thats true with rods also. I have been using the diawa heartland trolling rods that only cost $20 each and I think they are great. Whats the difference in the higher end rods and would I notice the difference.

just in case you cant make it to Columbus you might want to check out the daiwa wilderness trolling rods at fishusa.com. they are 15.95 and when I bought my 2 rods I got free shipping. but I don't know if they still offer free shipping on these rods. they are great looking rods and make good trolling rods.

Cabelas depth master reels are made by okuma for them. The "metal" ones look identical to the okuma Catalina's and are $124 compared to a Catalina at $179. I had all cold waters used them one season sold some and converted the others to wire reels. The cold water to the Catalina or clarion lc reel is a night and day. Cold waters and convectors feel cheap compared to them. You can get clarion for $120 and Catalina for $179 they are so smooth and little kids could reel in fish with ease with them.

ive never had a prob with my okumas 30s ive got 4 with power pro. 2 with leadcore, 2 with mono and 1 with wire . the wire I don't use the counter!!and 1 penn 320 with wire. I have 7 rods in my boat, mostly fish with 6 but keep 1 as a spare! 4 okuma rods and 2 great lake series, and 1 diawa wilderness! I love the great lake series rods!! aka its easyier to change reels on the rods than to store 10 or 11 rods in my sea nymph gls.. what ever the fish wants I will switch a reel over. 99 percent it is 4 powerpro and 2 wire.. the okuma 30s are just fine unless you like to spend $$$$$. the okuma 20s ive got set up for the inland lakes.. you get what you feel comfortable with!!! but I do suggest looking at the great lake series rods!!!!!! you can get em at karrens b@t in geniva for $30......
