Largest or weirdest catch on Lake Erie.

I have been fishing in LE since I can remember which is more than 50 years. The largest fish I ever caught was a carp about 30lbs. The weirdest was when we were fishing in the spring and I thought I was snagged on the bottom. I kept pulling and finally it came loose but I could feel there was weight so figured it was a gob of zebra mussels. There were 3 of us in the boat when I pulled what looked like a cue ball but turned out to be a giant eye ball! It was huge and had veins hanging off of it and we were all just staring at it until we started to smell it, it smelled like rotted fish. One of the guys told me to get rid of it because it was making him sick so I slammed my line down to get it off of my hook. I immediately regretted getting rid of it because none of us could imagine what could have had a eye ball so big. I joked if it was the Lake Erie monster he will be looking for me the rest of my life while swimming in circles! :)

One time there was 5 of us fishing near the Hen/Chick's in Canada in about 10' of water. One of the guys in the boat hooked what he thought was the bottom until I noticed his line going off into a different direction. This thing pulled out line at a slow steady pull until he was almost out of line, he tightened down his drag and could put a lot of pressure on the fish with 30LB braid line. We all reeled up and just watched him fight this fish for over 20 minutes, he would gain some line and it would pull the line back out over and over. The fish then headed for shallow water and he couldn't stop it from getting in to the rocks and his line broke. We never seen the fish, it never broke the surface so we didn't think it was a big steelhead. One of the old timers that was in the boat said he bet it was a big carp but we will never know what it was.

What is the largest and/or the strangest thing you have caught in LE?

We didn't catch this, but we saw a deer swimming about a half mile off of Cranberry. We were trolling, so we reeled in and guided the deer back to the shore with the boat. Another time we caught a bat that was flopping in the water with our net. It was exhausted, so I put a minnow net across a bucket so it could hang there and sleep all day. We took it back to the dock that evening and it flew off.

The largest fish was a 24 pound catfish while trolling harnesses last September.

Just 3 weeks ago, a seagull got too close and swooped through my line while perching. As he took off I saw my line loop around his wing. As he flew he pulled my line out of the water until it looked around his wing again and hooked his foot. I was worried about his survival if we just cut the line. So we reeled him in, held him down, covered his head and freed him correctly.

Snag fishing carp at 72nd.St.,hooked something we never saw.I was using 6'6" extra heavy rod rated for 60lb test line. The tip was as thick as your pointing finger,I had put on new 40lb. test yellow stren on a huge spinning reel. After catching many carp, I cast under the little bridge pulled back and hooked something huge.It started to go to main lake and I was pulling as hard as I could but it had no effect. It was moving at about a slow walking speed,I tightened the drag until that heavy rod bent like I never saw it bend before.I held on until all the line ran out,and it pulled until the line broke sounding like a 22 going off.I had put on about 150 yards of line that morning it took it all.Afterwards, a guy that witnessed the whole thing said that was not a carp, probably a big sturgeon,I still to this day never felt anything that powerful, I wish I could have at least seen it.

Mud Puppy shore fishing 55th when I was a kid, had no idea what it was, Snagged a giant Buffalo Carp night fishing for walleye out of Huron, it was Dead but netted a 5 ft Sturgeon s in the spring while jigging by Cone, caught a pike on a steelhead fly middle of January in the harbor at Edgewater (more common nowdays)

My buddy was trolling with spinners in 65 ft of water of Cleveland and caught a big bluegill, definitely weird to catch one trolling offshore.

since it's rough out and no one's fishing. This wasn't caught in erie but I once caught a umbrella out spin fishing, it did give up a good fight since it was open.

Another one is I caught a basket of trout but only 3 of them were alive the other 4 were dead.

While ice fishing between S.Bass and Green Is.some years ago my buddy snagged a wallet on a jigging rap and landed it.The owner lived on Catawaba,an elderly gentleman. Most valuable item was his VFW card and $3.My buddy almost had his leg ripped off by the guy's collie. Then to top that off the guy looked at the wallet and said " Yah, I lost it yesterday ice fishing " and turned around and walked into his house like it was no big deal.No thank's or amazement in the way his wallet was recovered.I guess this happen's all the time. LOL LOL

Avon Lake area of Lake erie, caught a 72" driveshaft on my anchor. It put up a helluva fight. Took 2 of us to reel it in, no free hands for a picture, released for another day. Definitely a FO!
