Hey guys,
I'm a student at THE Ohio State University:D and I would love to know some great places to BANK fish for Largemouth Bass. I started seriously fishing last summer, but I was back home.... so I dont know much about the Columbus area fishing. Here's the thing... I would love to put in the time, find the spots, and learn the bass patterns all over, but I simply dont have the time as a second year Mechanical Engineering student.

Please fill me in on some great places within ~20 miles of OSU's campus that has great LM Bass shore fishing. I definitely dont expect people to give away their sweet spots, but any information would be helpful. For example, if you could give me the name of a body of water and tell me what part to focus on, that would be helpful.

Also, for this time of year, what are you guys catching Bass on? I mostly throw jigs, rooster tails, and Heddon Tiny Torpedo's,.... but I'm more than willing to try anything once. Looking to get into crankbaits this year too.

In advance, your reply's are much appreciated.

dont realy bank fish (wade and Boat) but the Darby Bends is not bad but not great, there is 3 lakes and the Big Darby Creek runs right behind it. so it is a nice little spot, never catch any great size but good #'s. i will try to figure some more out and help ya out on were to go. they guys on this site are real helpfull so you should get some spots and quick. Also if ya can figure out Antrim Lake it is Good. Me i never catch anything there, but there is S-eye (State Record) LM, SM, Trout, Catfish, and more, if ya can figure out what the fish want and were there at its nice, From what i hear.

Most of the big impoundments in the area are more than 20 mins from campus. The only water around you is the Olentangy and Scioto and some ponds and quarries. If you want bass you're going to have to find some ponds or quarries to fish. The rivers offer spotty bass fishing at best. They do offer some world class carping though. The Fishing Hole filmed a show right downtown showing them catching 20-30lb carp all day long with the skyline in the background a few years back. I know the C.A.R.P fishing society club used to hold there fishing derby at the Olentangy right below the Lane ave bridge. The numbers and size of the fish were eye popping.

I will go ahead and widen my range, and I'll go as far as 40 minutes away from campus. I dont want to go much further than that because I drive a truck with a V8 (12 mpg) and the money is tight after buying my 40" LCD.

Thanks for the comments guys,... Keep them coming!:)

The closest thing to you is the confluence of the Olentangy and Scioto. Pigsticker is partly right about river bass; however, that area has some great largemouth (Check out some of Fishingredhawk's posts) and there is a lot of bank access in that area although some of it is a little hard to walk down to (but you sound young enough). Also, some areas are populated with homeless tents, so I guess you have to respect someone's "property." The other thing is that the rivers are full of bass--smallmouth! And those jigs and spinners you are throwing will catch them.

hey bubba, what do you use over there in those lakes at darby bend, i went twice and never went back, it was the middle of last summer, and is close to my work, that water seemed really deep with weeds at the bottom, i only caught one lil dink in the two times i went. seems like you might have to have some deep running bait maybe.

Hey man I didn't know you're an ME Major at OSU too! I am a 3rd year Mechanical Engineering Major at OSU and I bass fish around here all the time, and fish tournaments during the season. If you ever want to meet up I can help you out a little. I'm stuck bank fishing at the moment since the engine on my bass tracker is blown, should be up and running with a different engine in a couple weeks though.

I as well am a OSU student and go out as much as possible. (live on northwood and summit)If you want to go out sometime,in the next few weeks, just send me a private message and i'll show you spots i know of. Bubba is right you have to drive at least 20 mins to get to any lake around here. PS I'm goin out with GOTOBATTER to those ponds on tuesday prob. if were not too hungover after we beat the gators.

A simple 1/6oz. roostertail at Griggs Res. will put bass on the end of your line. I've had tourny guys beat the banks in front of me and not catch a thing. I toss the 'tail a few times and hook up. Also, small mann's spinnerbaits with the colorado/willowleaf blades in white works well and 1/8oz. chart. 3" power grubs/jig.
