This is my first year with a kayak, and I've been a bit nervous to take it on moving water. But I've been shore fishing and catching 12"-ish bass and little pike like in your two pics. I may have to man up and take the yak out.

Don't be afraid of moving water just be smart and don't go if its flooded. I have taken mine to the mighty Niagara for years and my skills probably aren't any better than yours.

Ok cool. I appreciate it. thought about launching near butterbridge but I saw a private launch sign stating you need written premisson from the canal Fulton canoe place. Il try ernies since I park there anyway to fish the lowhead dam alot. Thanks Again.

Ended up only getting out Sunday for couple hours with a buddy.. Not a bad day the little rain we got Sat.night brought the river up alil more then I thought it would. But between the 2 of use we got 7 small pike & 4 small mouth.. Talked to couple other guys fishing said they got a 28in pike about mile north of Butterbridge....

I'm with you on hooking up with a big one, I luckly have some lip grips witch work grate, I also take a leather work glove. Had a nice net but just broke it Muskeye fishing.. I had a 15in pike flipping around in the yak one day, not fun!!

Nathan, next time your around cf stop in and talk to the livery. Who knows they might give you permission. He'll probably ask for money though. I'm not a fan of that place. The prices have skyrocketed! I wish Indiana Bob's old place was still there! My first job, and my first task there was push mowing the grass taller than me at the butterbridge launch. Lol. That sucked! I think I was 14.

Was gonna go last weekend but ran out of time, gonna try this weekend, haven't caught a single smallie all year. Kinda worried about catching a big pike and having to unhook it in a little kayak lol[/QUO
Love catching pike and smallmouth from the river.
Lets all do our part and keep the fishery healthy, release the fish as quickly as possible. And please don't throw the pike up on the bank. They deserve to be in the rive just as much as the smallmouth. Got to tell you, nothing hits top water like a big old pike. Try a buzz bait along the bank, or around snags and log jams.

Where's the vest, well after fishing in the yak for over 4 hours , I was sitting on mine if you really need to know!!!! Kinda funny the Ranger we talked to, two days in a row never said a word about life best, and we talked for a good while...

99% sure vests are not required to be worn, only have to be in the boat. Any way that section of the tusc is so low, that if u drowned its because you don't know how to stand up! I've hit it all with sonar. 99.9% of it is one foot to three feet. There is one 7 foot hole right now, but its about five feet wide. Plenty of big fish there though.

From the ODNR website.

Ohio law REQUIRES life jackets to be worn...
  • while riding a personal watercraft.
  • while waterskiing or being towed on a similar device.
  • for children less than 10 years of age on any vessel less than 18 feet in length.
