Yeah, it's open. Lots of bank area, But the gate is locked at dark. I have gone and scouted the area, there is a series of exposed gravel bars (think islands) midway through the river. Very very shallow on the park side. Almost all of the current/depth is on the opposite bank. The canoe launch in the park is nothing more than a concrete ramp down to a very shallow section on the back of one of these gravel bars. You must carry your canoe/kayak through the woods about 100 or so feet from the parking lot to get to the ramp. Makes you wonder why they built a ramp when you have to carry your stuff throught the woods to get to it. There is one hole across and up river from the ramp, looks like a good carp hole, maybe catfish, It has a small cement wing dam on the opposite bank. Lots of carp and gar visible in this hole. Next is down river from the ramp, around the first bend. The current cuts across the river and creates a small eddy and possibly a deep area after the riffles. You could fish off of a sand bar into the eddy/slow section of the river. Couldn't tell you depth in the area, but it doesn't look like much at any point behind the park.
