Im here in Canton. Is there anywhere near stark county you can refer me to find grass pickerel? Any sightings in ponds or small streams?

Sippo lake had them years ago when it was filled in with grass like coontail and milfoil. When they dredged it in 1997 the chain pickerel habitat disappeared and most of the chain pickerel did as well. I have heard of a few caught but I haven't personally seen one since before 1997. We use to catch them from March till May on inline spinners like Rooster Tails and jointed floating Rapalas. I think I heard of a few in the Ohio Erie canal and Zeppernick Lake. I credit chain pickerel for getting me into fishing and I miss catching them at Sippo so it would be cool to find a lake where they were fairly abundant.

Lake Cable is the only lake I know of locally that has any numbers of them. Unfortunately it's a private lake. Years ago I had access with a friend who passed away and they would destroy our floats at the surface. You would see a swirl and they'd be gone. Some times you'd get them back and sometimes not. They seemed to really like the red and white ones.

The tuscarawas river has plenty of grass pickerel in it. I've caught them on a variety of baits while fishing for smallmouth and pike. Biggest one has been around 12" that I've seen. I have also seen a few in mogadore reservoir that were toads at 14" long. If you're just looking for an aquarium specimen, I'd run a seine in the tusc or any of its larger tributary streams in slack water areas immediately down stream of riffles. Good luck, hope this helps.

When I was younger, I used to slaughter them fishing backwater beaver ponds. Tiny spinner, or a tiny spoon always did the trick.

When I was a sophomore in high school, in my science class, I teamed up with one of the prettiest little girls on earth for our semester project. Our project was to start, stock and maintain an aquarium. It was a huge undertaking, but one we both thoroughly enjoyed. It was real long, so we created a stream in it. We filled it with all local fish including many grass pickerel, or grass pike as we called them. It was an awesome project, and my favorite of all time. Even though I was a perfect gentleman, I especially liked taking care of the project during our study halls when Patty and I were alone in the classroom...

Anyway, they were prolific fish and kept our aquarium lively and interesting.

No more chain pickerel in Long Lake. They faded out there years ago, though when I was a kid in the 70's we still caught a few. Grass pickerel, on the other hand, are in all of the Portage Lakes. Small minnows, small spoons, small spinners will take them. Work weed beds and fallen trees. This time of year they hold fairly shallow. I've seen them plenty of times in less than a foot of water.
