We have used the gulps in Canada with great results on walleye with jigs. Haven't tried them in Lake Erie as of yet. Blind Owl

 

I've used them many time to tip the jigs with while fishing the reefs in the spring. They work great.

 

If I have to tip a jig in early Spring (March to mid April) I use 3" Gulp minnows. Beats trying to keep the large shiners on the hook.

 

Have used them with great success on steelhead in the rivers,tried them on crappie rigs for perch with no luck,tried them three times,0 perch.

 

I too have tried them for Perch . . . not even a nibble. I have had great success with Gulp Alive 6 inch crawlers on harnesses for walleyes.

I tried one on one hook and a live minnow on the other. We were hammering the perch but not one bite on the gulp. I took it off after a few minutes

 

I had a 3 hook rig on for the whole time I fished yesterday,,not one fish on it ,,not even a white perch wanted it,,

 

We use 4" gulp minnows on jig heads in Canada for walleye and tear them up.

 

My bud and I have had great success fishing the 3" gulp minnies in different colors for smallies all year on reefs and around the islands. We use a dropshot about a foot or so up to start and adjust accordingly lower or higher depending on where they seem to want it.

We did get shutout though last weekend on that technique in 10 hours of fishing. They must not have been close to the bottom.

That rig has also netted tons of sheepdogs and big cats as well. It must smell good/bad if its attracting cats IMO.

Neither(if you mean tipped on a jig?) The best way is to cast it on a jig a good long way, leave your bail open til it hits bottom(keep an eye open on your line where it enters the water for "abnormal"/sideways movement). Close the bail and take up the slack, lift it, reel up the slack as it drops back to bottom, keep doing that with as much-or little, energy as you feel will work. (Some guys really rip that jig hard on the upstroke!) This is a preferred technique in the western basin early spring when the eyes are staging, before and after, their spawning runs up the rivers or onto the reefs.
