I caught my first walleye back in 1978 on a drift behind kelleys Is. I was hooked. So anyways, I started spendin most if not all of my time fishing further to the west over the last 30 years have only fishing around kellys maybe twice. With water levels and a lack of dredging at Turtle Creek, Oak Harbor, we are looking at a complete change up and docking in West Harbor. Enjoy a little more lake life than just fishing, but we are not tourists Island hoppers.

Focusing more towards Foxhaven. Can some of you veteran catawba folks shed some light on the fishing early season and opinions on affordable, fisherman friendly marinas in the area? Hope to have the Nauti~Cool down that way soon. Kinda stranded at the dock in Turtle Creek at the moment.

The cut is all plugged up with sand and boats like my 27 sportcraft are hitting sand now, with a second sandbar about 50 yards out now. If its a northerly blow there is just enough water as long as waves arent rolling in. Hard southerly blow and a boat like mine will be land locked. We had to get a new prop over it.

Affordable marinas in the area of west harbor is a thing of the past. You may want to look at Midway marina which is just up from Foxhaven. The floating docks at Midway used to be the least expensive.
Plenty of good fishing out of west harbor if you dont mind making a little run. Coming out of the new channel of west harbor can be like a washing machine with the amount of boat traffic at times.
As far as enjoying the lake itself there is east harbor state park and beach to the east of the channel and gem beach to the west

Depends what you like. The fishing around the whole area is good. Not just spring walleye. Haven't been up that way in a few years.

Spent many years docked in the Sandusky area (well over a decade). We docked at Cedar Point and a place called The Harbor, but I think it's called Castaway Bay Marina now. Not a fishing marina, more the wine and cheese style (hey, it was my dad's boat).

Another decade earlier docked in Huron.

FWIW, we fish Huron to Vermillion early, and Cleveland summer and fall these days. Plenty of 'eyes out there. We never run that far West any more.

I've been in W Harbor since the late 80's and love it. Have very good friends at Foxhaven (pleasure boaters) and they have been very happy with that place but I also agree with Redheads that Midway is probably a great place to start. Several other marinas along that west side as well, Catawba Moorings, Herls but I'm just not familiar with the pricing. Not a horrible ride out of the mouth of the channel to plenty of good fishing going east or west and yes, it gets a little busy in the summer but more so later in the day. We LOVE to fish but also enjoy going around the corner to E Harbor and anchoring in 3-4 foot of water and enjoying a day on the beach. Good luck!
