buddy fished berlin few days back, there was a bouy on the sandbar out in front of dutch harbor. on that very shallow spot. he went back yesterday and its gone. this is a very serious shallow sopt in the lake. my question is WHO ??? OR WHY WAS IT REMOVED??

Whoa....... that is not good. Hopefully someone has reported it to the state by now and they get that area marked as soon as they can. They really should have a lot more than one buoy on that area as well. I've seen years where they have 4 or 5 buoys and years where they only had a couple. Either way, they need to get it marked and quick. Hopefully they have a buoy on the sandbar at Bonner Rd. as well. As far as the who and why its gone........... your guess is as good as mine.

I think i know what your talking about, but what i saw was a white flag. And it wasnt even on the shallow area. It was near it, but not close enough. I did see it is no longer there. I have posted gps location of it in the other berlin thread. Saw a guy hit it so hard, nearly ripped his transom out. Watched another guy in an i/o swing his kids in a tube right over top of it. IDIOTS!!!! You can see the mud spot where its at, and when its choppy you can see waves capping over it. Dont be stupid, weve already got enough of those people.

I used to fish berlin all year and ive never seen the odnr put a marker out there. and to be honest i wouldnt either. its part of the "sunken" islands haha we are at fall pool this year bc they are fixing milton lake dam wich is right below berlin about 5 miles. the water wont go up much at all this year so the fishing is diff but still good if you can find them. but the almost that whole area is 3 fow or less from that spot to the new walking path bridge. if your out there u should go straight north or south from dutch harbor to 224 bridge maybe bow out east a little to be safe. ive seeb guys take off at a diagonal line from 224 to the west walking path bridge to be stoped by that same area. it is dangerous but it would take hundreds of markers to section off this area. theres a long point to right out in front of state launch on bonner road too. boating can be dangerous and if you dont klnow the water ask around at the ramp or try to follow where most other boats are running hopefully they can lead you the right direction and save your boat and money. ive learned the hard way a couple times but skeeter is much worse when waters low. it can be 10 ft to 6 inches in seconds. lost a prop out there before.

The area in question is very large and has peaks and valleys. Marking it with a single buoy seems silly to me. That whole section needs to be very clearly marked somehow so a newbie doesn't go screamin thru there pulling his kids on a tube. Several hi-vis buoys should be there IMO. How bout floating neon breakaway mesh fencing? I'm picturing a safety orange volleyball or cargo net looking thing floating on the water. Maybe I'll invent something. :D
I remember years ago people used to put a stick out there with a plastic cup on it. Sometimes there would be a few of them sticking up.

That's what we do down in NC where I'm from... Kind of a "boaters helping boaters" type of deal.

How's the boat traffic with the water being so low?

Ya'll stay safe!

Lake Milton's dam is under repair? I would think if the dam at Milton needed repair, that they would draw it down to repair it just like they did back in the late 80's when they completely rebuilt the outlet section of the dam. Lake Milton's water level is 5" below normal summer pool. In reference to work being done on the dam.....There was an application submitted to build a powerhouse at the base of the existing dam as well as installing a hydroelectric unit over one of its outlet gates. The construction is going to be on the downstream side of the dam. The application was submitted on November 22 of last year. To my knowledge and through research, it doesn't appear that construction has begun. That doesn't mean that it hasn't started, it just means that I can't find anything on the web either way.

Berlin and other area reservoirs (Mosquito, West Branch, Shenango) are part the flow augmentation system for the Ohio River. They (Army Corps of Engineers) also have to keep a minimum flow in the Mahoning River. As long as this area or the upper drainages feeding the Ohio River aren't getting rain, our area reservoirs are going to continue to drop. The following is a reply I received from the Pittsburgh district of the Army Corps of Engineers.

Classification: UNCLASSIFIED
Caveats: NONE

Mr. XXXXXXX

I received the following from our Water Management Chief in regard to your first question on your previous email:

"The flows listed are the total discharge. Berlin and Milton work together as one system to provide water in the Mahoning River. For today (June 15), they need to provide 180 cubic feet per second and with Kirwan providing 105 cfs, to meet the minimum flow target in the Leavittsburg-Warren Ohio reach of 310 cfs. Since Lake Milton is owned by the State of Ohio, the strategy at this time of the year is to hold Lake Milton stationary. With Berlin providing 155 cfs and the 27 square miles between the two projects providing some additional water, the pool at Lake Milton has remained stationary over the last several days."

Thanks again for your interest.

Best regards,
Sheila

If you have verified information that Milton Dam is under repair I'd love to read it. As far as Milton's water level being close to normal summer pool..... Lake Milton is not one of the reservoirs listed as a flow augmentation reservoir for the Ohio River. Lake Milton is owned by the state Ohio. The dam is run by the Army Corp of engineers, but they have no right to the water.

Bassbme is correct. As for the "shoe" area, I tell people all the time, get FAMILIAR with the lake before ya run full bore all over it. And it's mentioned on here alot also, but not everyone is a member,,,, I've bottomed out more than once over the years, but at 1 to 2 mph...just because I didn't know an area. The main thing is "use common sense and caution"!!!

was thinking or heading over but its 3 hrs away. is water safe to come depth wise. have never been but i do have hot maps to see lake when on it. thanks for help if any
Just make sure you take 8-9 feet off the depth from your map to be close to current water level. I saw 3 boats being towed back to the ramp this afternoon - not sure if they had engine trouble or ran aground, the boat repair shops should be busy.

Division of Watercraft could have made a ton of money writing tickets for all the violations I saw this evening at Berlin.
