What is everyones opinion about using snaps with crankbaits? They are supposed to help the action of the lure but do they spook fish? Just looking for some feedback. Thanks.

I don't believe they spook fish more than 1 or 2 treble hooks....In other words no.

Snaps with cranks are better than knots (unless you tie a loop knot). They let the bait work better, make it easier to switch lures and you don't wind up with a knot in the wrong place.

Started using the crosslocks snaps several years ago and never throw a crankbait without them now. Had a few baits broke off before that where I think the line got worn from the joint in the split-ring and the fish took the bait home with it. The only down side I have seen is that on some jerkbaits that suspend (in cold water) the crosslock will cause the bait to sink a little with the nose down.

I don't use snaps for one main reason. I would not retie as much. Therefore i tie directly to the split ring being careful not to get the knot in the gap. I thought about using the oval split rings to prevent this but havn't messed with it.

Depending on the manufacturer and supploer, both Cross loc's and DuoLoc's have been infected with low quality material for several years. This low quality will cause them to have less and less holding power as they are cycles over and over again. If I were using the discount store terminal tackle, I would use this simple test to see what quality steel is in the snap. Open the snap and bend it open beyond it's normal position. Does it return to or almost to the normal position? Do this a few times and see the results. The low grade material will fatigue very fast while the higher grade will continue to retun for a longer period of time. I had a series of failures with DuoLoc's and finally figured out that it was the low grade material used in the manufacture, not the design. I have set in a decent supply of quality DuoLoc snaps which I purchased from Captains Cove in New York on the last salmon trip and have had no failures since.

I really like using the snaps and have not had any problems with them actually breaking on a fish. They aren't necessarily going to last forever, but when worn, they're replaced readily. The one thing I do make a point of is taking my split rings off my cranks. Don't need both a split ring and a snap, in fact, having both probably changes the original action the lure designer intended.
