I am curious to see what people think. Do you think it is better to run reef runners with or without the split ring? Personally I run without because it seems no matter how much I tune them they never run correctly until I take the ring off and hook directly to the lure

You're not going to get any more respectable responses in this forum than you got in the other forum. Mr. Stedke is the man when it comes to Reef Runners (and probably a lot more areas) and as he replied to you before:

"I've never taken a split ring off. To me the horizontal hunting action (call it goofy if you like) is what makes them superior.

Tune them carefully so the goofy does not become a rolling lure."

Leave them on. Your not tuning them correctly. You are probably over compensating when you try and tune them, if you feel the eye bend you went WAY to far, use the tune a fish not pliers and just lean into it a little bit with your hand. I know you run a big boat and I have found that reef runners are a tad harder to tune on bigger boats due to all the water they pull and turbulance they put off as they troll through the water which might be part of your problem. Next time try letting out 30 ft and reeling up fast to the rod tip to see where the bait goes, by bringing it in faster than your trolling speed you'll know for sure that your bait will without a doubt run properly at your troll speed and another thing try letting that line out off the side of the boat away from your boats wash a little crankbait isn't any match to the wash of a huge charter style boat you'll never seen it running properly or even improperly in all the bubbles and turbulance. Give that a shot next time. When I fish on my friends 30 baha cruiser this is what I do and it works fine while tuning.

Sometimes you need to bend the top of the eye towards or away from you...

Ive only had 1 this year I couldnt get right no matter what I did...Mr Stedke told me I might have a stuck ball bearing in there...I might look at it...But I have so many I just discarded it put another on and got back to fishing...

Kevin...Generally when tuning I try to run em off the side of the boat where its out of the prop wash. Run em back 10-15ft and visually watch them. If they are running true its out on the boards with em...If not back in for more adjustment....Its ok to have em run just a little goofy...

I know a lot of people are not real keen on the whole tuning lures thing, but they all are getting this way...I pulled a bunch of the new storm Mad Flash Thundersticks out last weekend and had to tune them all basically...Atleast Reef Runner is very open about tuning and provide the necessary tools to make their lures run properly.

I didn't catch a fish til i had em tuned properly. Its very important.. take your time and it takes very little strenght/pressure, they just need a nudge. Also it my not need so much as turned but straightened so that the top is lined up with the ring as it enters the bill. May i suggest a pair of glasses. I have better than20/20 vision and still have a difficult time.

Leave the split rings on. Pick up a tun-a-lure from reef runner for tuning and use it. You don't need much force on em. You do have to get them out of the boat/prop wash. I like to go to the front of my CC and tune up there. Hope this helps.

I'm terrrrrrrable with RR.

However, that Stedke fellow (that's you Jim) fished with me one day last yr and helped me a lot. Listen to his suggestions.

Sidebar: I had a RR ? a while back and sent it off to them.
Actually got a response that answered my ?.

You need to make sure they are tuned to run fast. It takes a little practice to figure out how to get them to run correctly, but once you have tuned for the faster speed they will work for you. Have some faith, they are the best crankbait at Erie. One way to do it is, don't slow down under 2mph. Set your spread up and while you fish, tune your lures. I have all of my reefrunners tuned now by doing this. The bananna shape makes them kick out to the side every once and awhile and that is a killer on the walleye. Hope this helps.
