Going to go look at a 16' Smokercraft on Saturday. 1986 it comes with a 30hp Johnson
Problem I have is that he has title for boat, No Title for Motor. He said it was bought from a guy in Indiana with no title. Looks like a nice motor. What would you do?
Thanks,
Jim

Pass on it. I have played that game, and it resulted in a boat sitting on my property for almost a year. I couldn't use it, because it was under investigation as a possible stolen boat. Ask the owner to get a notarized bill of sale from the previous owner and then he can secure a motor title. After that, you are good. Just my 2 cents.

Depends on the deal you are getting. You need to have the motor title to sell the motor in the future. If you plan on keeping the motor the title really means nothing. You are not required to carry it on your boat, you never have to show it. It's just a way for further revenue enhancement for the state.
You have the title for the boat. That's all that really matters to get the registration numbers.
You motor title will sit in your safe deposit box for eternity unless you want to sell it. There is no need or use for a motor title.
That's why many other states do not require it.

I have to agree with lewzer. I've passed on motors before because they didn't have titles but now I would buy one without one if I had no reason to believe it was a stolen motor. Titles get lost.. (happens a lot I believe....just ask my 2 sons LOL)...and they don't get replaced because of the hassle. If you feel comfortable with the history of the motor...buy it.

Call or visit your county clerk of courts Title division and/or call

1-877-4BOATER

Then.....

Draw up a standard Bill of Sale describing each item, the motor with its ID number/model and year info on it as well as the HIN # and Trailer # if applicable.

Have a notary present for the signing of the boat Title endorsement as well as the Bill of Sale and receipt of cash. A bank provides that service.

1-877-4BOATER should be called first.

Out the state oh my you can get your ass in hot water if it was ever stolen .as you will be charged with inter state thief.Bringing stolen stuff across state line.Lets hope it was not that way.you have a time getting a title if no pin number on it.that prove it maybe stolen.if theres one I think you can check with Sheriff office see if it be stolen and if it is turn it over to them.if they catch you with it you going get a bad rap. Take all info you can on it and who you got it off.I had lot run in on these no title boats.man lot them. The motor is same it should had a title if over 10 horse ok.but as the others say it is seldom of use but then it proves you bought it last if stolen you got proof you had one.with no proof the cops will do little to try track it for you or return to you if it is stolen and they find it.Well that is my 2 cents worth on what I do with it.it is same with a car.Who buy a car with no title.not me says the bee.or not I says the fly.LOL

When you title a boat in Ohio, generally you register it with the # off the engine. So right off the bat you know this isnt the orignal engine....However it still could have been purchased legally.

However I think now when you go to change the title of this vessel you may be required to include the # off the engine...

When you purchase an engine do you really ever have a title for it? Friend of mine just bought a new 8hp Yam and they just handed it to him...no title...

I sold a 70hp Merc quite a few years back off a boat no title involved...Sold a 20hp as well...

I bought a boat and motor that was from MI. back in January. Michigan doesn't have titles on motors. I took a pic of the plate with the model and serial numbers on it, went to the title office and they issued me a title for it. I'm sure they checked to make sure it wasn't stolen befor issuing me the title.

The only "title" issued in Iowa is on the trailer. The boat is registered with IDNR and the data is kept and monies collected thru the County Recorders office by the County that you live in. No mention of numbers on OB. All information is kept on the sales receipt. So I guess it is according to each State laws.
