Hey Deerhunter, Ive got a similar sized boat. 18' with a 90 HP. I took my 9.9 off because the 90 trolls slow very nicely. You can go to Dicks or Gander Mountain and pick up trolling combos for $65 to $85 a piece. These feature 9 to 11 foot rods with line counter reels. Spool the reals with some type of no stretch braided line. Grab a half dozen Dipsy Divers and a few rod holders and you're ready to go. Because my boat is small I usually only run 3 rods but I have ran 5 without too much trouble. You can set the Dipsy's to run right or left. I run 17 lb test mono leaders off of the Dipsy's. Its pretty easy and cost effective to get started but like anything else fishing related you can spend tons of cash if you want. Now get some Stinger type spoons and some worm harnesses and you're all set.

Deerhunter,

A call to Gary will be a great start if you want, PM me and I'll get in touch with you too. If you can get to the Cleveland boat show, check out some of the seminars in Anglers Alley. There are shows on boat set-up, trolling tactics (both Erie and inland) etc, The Sportsmans Outpost has a booth right there with several VERY good deals on line counter reels (IMO very important in trolling) and trolling rods. Denny will give excellent advice to both novice and advanced fishermen.

You guys go out far in them boats? Or are you trolling close to shore. Sorry about jumping in but I'm also trying to get started trolling also. Bought 4 nice mid to large bait casters spolled with 50 lb braided line,4 dipsys, two walleye boards and a lot of cranks. I have a 17 1/2 foot bayliner trophy with a 85 hp outboard a depthfinder with gps and a marine radio. I jumped in both feet Knowing money was going to play out. I am on permanent medical leave and terminal but fishing for as long as i can. I also have 17 1/2 sea nypth with 9.9 and decked also for the small lakes. Looking for any info I can get.

if you're going to lake erie, you might want to take higher hp boat. due to the lake turning over in matter of minutes and you want to get out and into safety fast.
viper1, baitcasters will work also using "wrap" 1wrap= feet of line out. we usually would troll closer to shore at night and just flatline our lines using deep divers, husky jerks or anything that rattles. speed wise we use our gps usually between 2.0 - 3.0 mph. i'd like to get it slower but it'll just stall the motor.my .02

Viper .. u dont have to apologize for asking questions... this is how we all got started and that is what this great web site is for!!!, for all of us to use & to learn , share stories and experinces to become better fisherman/women.. and to enjoy this great sport and bring more people into walleye fishing...
so jump on in any time ust make sure u land in the boat!! ;)

Deer hunter .. sounds like a great set up... do not forget good rod holders .... tite locks makes a great one for the money $23 to $32 a piece ...... try 4 of each set up ....4 dipsey rods/ with line counters...the rods are cheap $15 to 30 bucks apiece....also get..... 4 long line / planer rods ... you can switch back and forth and use the rods also for driften .... we use the gander mountian kind along with dawias line counters... the key it to be versitile.... also 4 in- line planer boards..About $22 to $25 a piece.. we like offshore boards..and then u put glow sticks on them for the nite bite!!

speed is the key along with boat control u wanna get your slowest speed down to .8mph via GPS to as high up to 2.8 for mid summer and steelhead.... dont forget snubbers on your dipsey for this reason..... 12 mono... Berkly XT .. and the dipsy rods use power prow 20lb test does the trick.......

wow so much..... its sound like alot... but if you get stuff little by little soon you will have your arsenal!!!

I you both want ...shoot me over any email and id me more than happy to tell you more.. we fish off an 16fter as well with a 25hp and a trolling motor..

I'd recommend going out with a couple different seasoned trollers, and maybe a 'hands-on' charter. The advice here is all terrific, but to see and experience it all in practice makes a world of difference!
