Mogadore and outboard motor question?

I know this question has been done to death. I've actually participated in threads with this question in the past. What I want to know now is .... are the rumors I've heard true? Can anyone tell me with absolute CERTAINTY that you can now put in and use a boat with a gas powered outboard motor on Mogadore Reservoir?

From what I have heard, boats that are 18' and smaller are now allowed to have a gas operated outboard on them, as long as the motor is tilted out of the water, and only an electric trolling motor is used to power the boat? Is this true? Please .... I'd rather not get any " I heard that it's true" replies. I'm looking for someone that knows for certain, regardless of the answer.

And .... if this is in fact true beyond a shadow of a doubt .... is the ramp on route 43 in good enough condition to launch a smaller bass boat (16 1/2') Years ago I would have said that the Lansinger Rd ramp would be the only ramp I would have attempted such a feat at, but ..... from reading posts on this site I wouldn't even attempt to take a boat and trailer of that size down to the ramp. Plus, from what I've read I wouldn't be able to enjoy a day on the water because I'd be worried about my truck and trailer being vandalized.

Can anyone help me in my quest for knowledge?

I talked to the fish management supervisor at Div. 3 and yes, you can launch any boat in Mogadore with a gas motor on it as long as you "never" run it on the water. If it has a built-in tank, no problem. If a portable tank, it must be removed. Electric power only. NO gas engines for "power loading"(violates the regulations) allowed either so maybe bring you knee-high or hip boots to hook up your winch. Of course, this might limit the "size" of boat you will be loading/unloading esp. with the level still down. Appears the water level might have recovered about 50% of the draw-down depth as of now. Those shallow ramps at Mogadore are not conducive for larger boats at all. They are marginal at best for smaller boats! You might not be able to get a larger boat thru the 43 tunnel if launching there.
If you still have doubts, call(as I did) Div. 3 hdqrts and hear it yourself from an authority. Get a name and title of the person you talk to.

Thank you CJ !!! I don't feel I have the need to call and ask for myself. I trust your answer. I had thought of calling Div 3 headquarters since the state now manages the fishery, but I didn't think they'd have any say as far as boating restrictions. My guess would be, that the state had something to do with the change in regulations. If so, bravo to the state.

I had actually forgotten that they had the water drawn down, thank you for reminding me of that. As far as the route 43 ramp goes ... the last time I launched a boat at that ramp was in the late 80's. It wasn't that good then, and used to have a point that the trailer tires would drop off rather abruptly. And that was with a shorter trailer than I have now. Does anyone know if they've done any improvements to that ramp, or if it still has that point at which a trailers tires would drop off? I sure wouldn't want to find out the hard way.

As far as getting under route 43, as long as the lake isn't any higher than what it normally is (at least back in the 80's) I'm pretty sure that if I remove the seats from the front and rear deck, my boat should fit under it. I may have to push down a little to get the motor to clear, but it would be better than worrying about launching at Lansinger Rd.

Thanks again for your reply CJ, it is much appreciated. To anyone with knowledge of the route 43 ramp, your reply will be much appreciated as well.

Drove down lansinger this morning and the water looked to be up considerably. I think you would have much better luck launching there. seen a guy earlier this year when the water was way down launch a very large bass boat with little issues. as far as the drop off on 43 I believe its still there. I remember finding it once back in the early 2000s.

Thanks for the reply lmbchckn .... the Lansinger Rd ramp would be my choice to use as well. It looks like I need to take a drive out there to check the condition of the road leading in to it. From reports I read on this web site earlier this year, the 4 wheel drive guys had it pretty torn up.

In my research before starting this thread, I did find out that the state is responsible for the launch ramps, so maybe they'll be doing something about the route 43 ramp. I think I'll take my chest waders with me when I drive out to check out the Lansinger Rd access and check out the route 43 ramp at the same time.

Thanks again for your reply. It is much appreciated.

I have been wanting to fish Moggie all year since they allowed gas powered boats to launch there. The main issue for me has been the low water and difficulty launching there from it. I have a 16.5 foot alumninum bass boat and although it's pretty easy to launch shallow I do need some depth to do it. How is the water for launching now I live 10 minutes away so maybe I should just drive over.

The roads not too bad right now. they fixed it pretty good back in the spring. there are some small potholes popping up from the rain weve been getting but overall its pretty good.
You sir, just saved me a few gallons of gas. Thank you very much for your help. I don't know how often you fish Mogadore, or if you get out there on a boat at all, but if you happen to see a black and gray Bubble Bee bass boat out there in the future, either wave and I'll come over to you, or come over to me and say hi.

Thanks again to all that had answers for me. Very much appreciated.

Finally got to Moggie today.fished form 1pm to almost 7. Getting in wasn't to hard bumpy at ramp but parking was tricky.
The bass we slow at first but fishing a 8" havoc ribbon tail around rocks and weeds took close to 20 largemouth. I did not get great size most were a 1 to 2.5 but the action was great towards late afternoon. I did break off a good fish on hook set and had a nice fish blow up my buzzbait coming in.I have not been on Moggie in 20 years but since I live so close and I can use my boat it will be a reg stop from now on.
