Looking for some gills for dinner and not much luck. At noon I decided to pack up the boat and head for home. I hooked into this fish and it just peeled the line off my rod. The fish and I went back and forth for a good couple of rounds. I just got it to the surface and it was the biggest blue gill I have ever seen in my life. At that point when we where eyeing one another it took off and my line just snaped. I have caught some very large red ears and gills but have never experienced anything like this. State record is around 3.5 lbs and this fish had to be a match or close to it. Just had to tell someone who would appreciate the story. John

I know exactly how you feel! I was fishing with my father in Cambelford, Ontario about 5 years ago. The water level was down a bit and the weed growth was to the surface. It was that sloppy kind of weeds that gets on just about every type of lure and was so thick you couldn't fish it....only the pockets in between the mats of weeds. We decided to fish over the side in the pockets with ultralight gear for perch and were doing alright catching some keepers for the pan....nothing to brag about. Then something smashed my mini-daredevil and gave me an incredible fight. Once I got it to the boat we realized we left the net back at the camp as we were planning on panfishing and didn't intend to use it (really big mistake). So I lifted the fish straight out of the water by holding the line and had the fish eye to eye with me when the line snapped and went back in the water and quickly away! My father witnessed the whole thing and we couldn't believe what we saw! The fish was the biggest perch we have ever seen. It was the size of a wall hanger bass! Huge! I about lost my lunch when I lost that fish. Yes, I can appreciate your story about the bluegill!

I would say it went over 12" it looked larger than a serving plater. I have seen a lot of mounts in different bait shops and a few in aquariums (sp) and none have come close to the size of this. It swam past the boat 2 times in the fight and all I could see was it's black back which was about 3" thick so I just figured it was a bass with an attitude. On the third trip by the boat it rolled over on it's side just to tease me with my first and last look. It reminded me of the mutton snappers I catch in Fla. It's eye looked the size of a poker chip. What a memory. It is just a shame I couldn't share the sight with other folks. John
