Local help needed with new boat

Hey there
I just bought a 2007 bass tracker 175 w/ 40hp 4-stroke Merc and though I have had a few boats over the years, they were small, easy to operate boats with no steering wheel etc. This boat is bit intimidating to me now that I have it home. I need someone who has solid experience to show me how to launch, take off, trim up and down while driving, etc. Perhaps there is a kind soul out there who either is retired or has time to drive out with me to a lake and give me an hour or two of instruction. I am very flexible time and day-wise. I live in Fairfield, Ohio 45014. I was reluctant to post this request but I don't know anyone who has experience with this kind of boat. Whoever can help me out will get lunch on me and a $20 gift card to bass pro.

If I lived closer I would take you up on that deal. Someone will help you out off of here. I was the same way when I got my first boat like that. Most dealers will go out with you and get you comfortable with it if you bought it from a dealer.

Wished I could help, I live in dayton. I have lots of work to catch up on.Or I would help out.
I know the feeling of intimidation.
My first boat a Ranger bass boat 150 hp. With a five blade prop would shoot out of the hole like a rocket. Top speed 70 . WOW. What a rush.I was so nervous first few times i was sweating.And backing down ramps in crowded ramps with lots of bass tourney anglers there. I was scared first few times ,
but it will come with time.
Theres alot of good guys on this site that would help a fellow angler out and not ask for anything.

If you're willing to come up to CJ Brown in Springfield, I'd be glad to help you out Saturday or a day early next week. Just let me know. I have experience on a wide range of boats, Lunds, Trackers and currently a 620 Ranger.

The best thing to do is practice.......It will come with time...

Don't worry too much about the high performance. That combo will only go about 35 MPH. Just be sure to follow the break in instructions to a Tee, otherwise the motor warranty will be void. Over the 10 hours or so of break-in you will learn a lot about the boat. Read the manual as well. You will learn a lot of the little things that way.

Well I live to far to come help you but I can tell you this, just get out and drive it and start figuring things out, it would be easier to just have someone come show you the ropes but it's your boat and you need to learn how to do things on your own, grab a fishing partner that you fish with or will be with you the most and go get your hands dirty.

I understand how you feel about it but listen to my experience.

I had a 16 foot aluminum tiller with a 25hp motor, sold it and got a 21 foot ranger with a 250 evinrude, 9.9 kicker, 101 bow mount, 3 lowrance units, electro steer for the kicker, panther lift for kicker, custom trailer, a crazy cover all sorts of gadgets and expensive rigging devices. How do you think I felt when it was time to take it out, scared to death and didn't know what the hell to do, I never went fast than 14 mph in my tiller now I had to deal with a wheel boat strapped full of 250 pissed off horses and I only fish lake erie, that can be a challenge in itself, it's all part of the fun of getting a new boat, new toys, new motors, and all sorts of fun stuff that goes along with it.

So I guess what I'm saying is just strap on a set and go wing it, examine the boat and where things are, play around with controls and see what happens.


I can tell you how to run it though, he's what you do before launching make sure your trim is up so if the ramp is shallow you don't bang your skeg, prime your gas bulb till it's tight, put the boat in the water, when you have suffifcient water depth trim all the way down till it won't go any further, motor over to the area where you can lay the hammer down and just nail it, when you want to put the boat on plane you want all the throttle you have to be enganged so nail it, the bow of the boat will rise up at first then when it starts to come down and the boat level's out your on plane, when it does you can either trim up to go faster or ease off the thottle a little bit to slow down. If you let off the throttle to much you may fall back off plane, this is where trial and error comes into play. You want to be aware of what your WOT is or wide open throttle, you need to find out what it is by asking who you got the boat from or a little research from the manufacture, if it's 5000 RPM you can trim up till you hit this RPM this will be where you want to stop trimming and this should be your top speed. If your ripping along at WOT and want to slow down trim back down and ease of the throttle the boat will come down and come to a rest, then you can motor around at a slow pace and find fish.

Pm me if your headed to CC ever. You don't need to buy lunch for me or give me that gift card though, I will just help ya out. I work second shift so the only time I could help is mornings or weekends. But I am out there a lot so I could work with you, if you struggle backing and/or your by yourself I would try a weekday morning to have less people to deal with at the docks. Right now and until mid april there are only ramps at CC no docks.

If you PM me a time you'd like to go, I can help you. I fish CC 2-3 times a week. Usually on the weekend and at least once during the week in the evening. It might be easier if you wanted to hop in my (or anyone elses) boat and I can explain what I do and why I do it. You can just mimic the actions in your boat. No repayment necessary, just help someone else out if you get a chance. It all comes around in the end. If the rain holds out, I'm planning on fishing Saturday during the day. I'll check my PM before I leave.

If you give it a try by yourself, the only thing about trimming the motor up when running is too much trim. You want to trim it up so you have a minimum amount of drag. You'll be able to tell when you find the right spot. Too much trim and the boat will start porposing (nose bounces up and down like going over big waves...only no waves). If that happens, back the trim down a little bit and you should be dialed in. If your motor is propped right (proper pitch) your motor should be very near your WOT rpm as suggested by the manufacturer (mine is 5280rpm). With the motor, watch the RPM for understanding what the motor is doing. The speedometer is only there for show. If you over-rev the engine, it could get costly. Happy fishing.

Wow. So many anglers responded to my call. Not only here on the board but I recieved numerous pm's. A big thanks to everyone! I will be heading out on Wednsday to give it a go (if the weather plays nice) with a guy right here in my area (Thanks R!)

It is such a pleasure to know that so many folks are willing to help out a fellow angler. I hope somewhere down the line I will be well versed enough in the ways of boat operation that I can return the favor to someone on this board.

Jellywormer: You shouldn't be surprised by the positive responses you got from the folks on this website. This is one of the most cordial group of guys I have ever witnessed. They have helped me out on numerous occasions with sites, locations, equipment, etc. Can't beat these guys.;) :G

There are some tricks that you will learn as you go, just get a chair and a soda and sit at the ramp on a weekend and watch others while at the ramps - you will see the do's and don'ts
