I was looking up the bending branches angler scout and it seems that on one site it claims an aluminum shaft and on another a fiberglass shaft. Can anyone confirm either way?

Both are correct, you can get the scout either way. But the standard is Aluminum, I have one with fiberglass, not sure how to get it that way as there web site says aluminum, it could have been a demo version though.

 

BB Scout Angler ($99) is fiberglass and Scout Classic ($149) aluminum. The aluminum is only 2oz lighter otherwise same paddle. I have 2 Scout's and no problems. Get the coupon and free ship like ML said.

 

know the scouts I have seen at paddleshops are aluminum handle, the classic is a fiberglass handle. if you're going to be out in chilly weather is to with the fiberglass handle. it doesn't get cold like aluminum. ive put my classic through some pretty rough situations and those things are very sturdy and well built. I'd go ahead and spend the extra 50, it's def worth the extra cost.
