Well I've gotten my Fish Ohio channel and flathead out of the way, so I guess it's time to target some blues.....

I moved here from Iowa in January and we didn't really have blue catfish there, so I'm not experienced with them. Most of the info I've found online is pretty generic and sounds just like advice for channel cats. Hoping somebody here can help me increase my odds of getting a blue as opposed to more channel cats.

So, does anybody have some good advice on how to target blue catfish?

we for starters only 2 inland lakes have them, Hoover and Dillion, other then that youll have to fish the Ohio River, Blues are similar to channels with how you catch them, On the Ohio drifting is a pretty good technique this time of year to take blues, they will eat both live and fresh cut baits and typically are more of a mid depth feeder then channels so if your fishing minnows under a float, where they are at, youll get one.

Good luck

Actually there's also several smaller lakes that the DNR stocked 6-7 years ago. A conservation officer told me that it's not a secret, but that they aren't making any effort to advertise which lakes those are.

If you're curious I can PM you some more specific info.

Thanks for the info. Any suggestion how deep to drift?

That's interesting I was unaware of any other stocking besides Hoover and Dillon. I do know that the stocking at Dillon didn't go as well as planned. since it is a flood control reservoir when they had to open the gates the odnr said surprisingly a lot of blues made a run for it.

TK the same way they got into CJ Brown, by fishermen bringing them up from the Ohio River or in CJB case, there is a big pay pond right across the street and many folks moved them from there to the lake over the years, the population at Eastfork is more fishable then the one at CJB. Same way Flatheads got into CJB. since there is no resident population of them in the feeder streams.

Is this what has happened at indian with the flat head numbers there now? Or has it alwzys been a decent flathead lake?

yeah, same deal as 10 years ago no one had ever heard of a flathead being caught at Indian.... They are not native that far up the GMR

I have my suspicions that the 3 day tourney started folks "bringing" them in. At least any fish weighed stays with the officials and are ALL released back into the lake, 3 years ago a few in the low teens weighed in, then last year 2-3 in the 13-16 lb range and last year 2 in the low 20's so that age group is getting bigger each year, Im expecting 2 over 25 this year for the tourney.

In inland lakes look for bait and deep water this time of year use fresh cut bait shad or skipjack are best as for the ohio river they are netting the heck out of the blues around Cincinnati so your best bet is to hit the river where it broders ohio and west Virginia they have been stocking there for over ten years and they don't allow netting there.Same in the river look for bait and fish ledges and bends. As for blues I have always done better in the colder months October -march they seem to feed more. They are getting big down the W.V border the is a youtube video of a 67 lb fish caught down there.
