Were i grew up didnt really matter much, Backwater swamps & many smalll creeks, Loaded with big Bullfrogs. I usually did my giggin early season tho in June. Right after a good storm.
I used to frog gig all summer. I've slowed down some in recent years. It's getting harder to find spots that hold good numbers of bulls. I have my best luck from a boat or canoe hitting the edges of lakes rather than marshes or ponds. Used to gig nimisilla almost every weekend. Once the metroparks took over and brought with it their new rules I kinda lost steam.
Get yourself a normal white headlamp. But don't go too bright. I tried buying the brightest headlamp I could find thinking it would help, but it definitely had the opposite effect. Truthfully, an actual gigging headlamp is still the best option in my opinion. Long lasting batteries, and you can still get a warm white color temperature.
Good luck to you! It really is a blast when you find some good spots. Not much better in the world than some fried frog legs.
I grew up in Niles, and my friend next door had an older Brother that used to go gigging with his friend who had a canoe. They worked Mosquito Creek as it flowed through Niles. One guy would paddle the canoe, the other would gig the frogs and they'd split the haul. They would pack their freezers with frog legs! There was no need for their families to buy chicken wings when the frogs were on!
Never tried. Seems like after rains & how fast rivers rise & move that it wouldn't be good habitat for frogs. But you never know. Think I mentioned before that Auburn Marsh is in your area & I'll bet it's loaded with frogs. Pretty thick getting in there though.
Yeah rivers & creeks are good, Indont know nothing bout the Hoga or anything cause i dont live up there. But im sure i can be good. Im most likely gunna be floatin a small creek opening night.
There's some good slow areas loaded with lillys and stuff like that and some break offs that are like the mouths of old feeder creeks it's close to the headwaters so it's pretty marshy area. Auburn marsh is not boat accessible so not really on my radar
I mean compared to A predator hunting light or Raccoon hunting light its a good price. They also have couple differnt models for under 100$ Not as bright but they would be just fine
Anybody going out tonight? I tore a muscle in my thigh right at my knee and I'll be down for a few weeks. Don't figure wading lake shores and shoreline is a smart move. Looking forward to seeing some reports.
Forgot i got ton of stuff to do tomorrow, Might go out tomorrow night But Sunday will be a super long day too, Might just wait for the muggier nights this week.
