Found him....

Found him....and wish I could've found him back in December. Biggest buck I've ever shot with my Ruger 450 Bushmaster. He hid himself, very well and a lot closer to my house than I would've possibly imagined. Makes me sick, but at least I found him and can put the rest of the story to rest and have some closure.
I attempted to reassemble him on the ground, as best as I could, but his legs with the hooves were missing....I assume coyotes.

I hit him head on in the brisket, favoring the right side, at 25 yards and he went down hard. Then he got back up, ran into the woods that I was standing in and fell again. It was very thick and I was attempting to get a second shot, when he fell a third time and rolled over a log, got back up and ran another 30ish yards and fell a 4th time and slammed into another downed log. He actually pushed that log a couple of feet, but got back up and took off running hard into the thickest part of the woods. I was stunned that he kept getting back up as I was watching his rack thru the brush and then he fell a 5th time.

I waited an hour an a half, before slowly tracking him....blood trail tracked him, along with scuff marks in the leaves. He went a solid 160 yards, before the blood and scuff marks disappeared. I left the woods and came back to look around, at 4 p.m. and never found him. According to where I found him, today, I had to walk within 30 yards of where he hid himself. :cautious: Until this event, I've never had any animal walk off, after being hit with this 450 BM. A second shot and/or better first shot placement would've made the difference. However, as we all know.... "shoulda woulda coulda in one hand and a doughnut in the other, and you've got breakfast". Live and learn. :sneaky:

Yes, sir! He was something to behold and the largest buck in the group. (y) I'm going to contact a taxidermist about restoring his antlers. I gave some thought to doing it myself, but I'd rather someone with experience put their skills to work to do it right.

Well..... I contacted a local taxidermist about restoring the antlers.
It's only $100 for the first 6" of antler and $25 for every inch afterwards. Pass....hard pass!!! (n)🚫

Squirrels. This woods is filthy with squirrels! Grey, black, fox and red, it has them all and in good numbers. A guy that bow hunts the same woods with me, took a day off of bow hunting and brought his suppressed 22 rifle for squirrels. He had his limit of 6 within 45 minutes. (y) I hunted that same area the next day and there was no apparent loss of tree rats. :sneaky:

As it turns out, you have to have a "dead head" or carcass permit (it's free), from the GW for a deer head with the antlers attached. I contact one of the GWs in the area, met up with him today and he wrote me out a permit. He was very impressed with the antlers and understood my need for closure with this buck. :)
You can pick up all the antlers you want, but if their attach to the skull, you need a permit.

Many years ago while in a climbing stand bow hunting I watched a wounded buck come along a ridge about 75 yards away from me. He climbed into a blow down and stayed there for about a half an hour. Then I watched him come out of the blow down and continue out the ridge. About 15 minutes later I watched two bow hunters go by blood trailing him. I talked with them the next day. They shared they never caught up with the buck. He was buried deep in that blowdown. I'm guessing he heard or scented the approaching hunters causing him to move on.
