That's the kind of gills I've been looking for since I moved here. Did that come out of the river?

it came out of a pond out in holland...just a little puddle actually! its LOADED with gills and bass some are the biggest i EVER seen. if u catch the smaller gills the bass eat them up b4 you can reel them in...my cousin kept about 10 smaller ones...i hate keeping any fish besides gills and thats cuz i use them for bait...here is a pic of the bass...like i said there small, there are many more in there twice these size!

 

Haven't seen a stringer of largemouths in 25 years.

Great catch and great bait as well.

 

Personally Id use like 7-8lb bass for bait. You know, for those REALLLLY big flattys....80+ pounders....

 

On a serious note, I've never gotten into cat fishing nor do I plan to. Just not my thing. But for bait and using gills how do you rig them up? Just a big hook through the back near the dorsal? Or is there more to it than that?

I use a circle hook or a kale hook, and hook them behind the dorsal fin. It usually helps to cut the bait a little. I like to cut part of the tail fin and get it to bleed a little.
