well i found a nice secluded spot along the rocks this afternoon and was throwing a little cleo (blue/silver) for while. Im reeling in thinking "i wonder if im doing this right?" (speed, depth, wondering if my lure action is right) when all of a sudden POW! my rod bends over and starts shaking like crazy! Oh my goodness whats happening?? I normally dont catch ANYTHING when i fish for steelhead (lol...sorta) so im thinking "well, i dont know what it IS but i caught SOMETHING!"

So Im reeling in, fighting this fish, it starts running back and forth like an angry dog on the end of a long leash, and im thinking it must be a steelhead when it LEAPS and does a cartwheel out of the water! Steelhead! Then it makes another splashy leap! Holy crap! Then nothing.....

"Oh no, I lost it..." so i quickly reel in all my slack line just in case and sure enough, feel the pulling again and its right below me!

It zigs, zags, rips out line (had my drag set light) and basically just fought like a wild man.

Finally it quieted down and I was able to get ahold of it. I brought it up for a quick measurement....23". (maybe 24...i wanted to get it back in the water quick) I would have guessed a lot more!! This was truly an amazing fish, beautiful silver and fought like heck. I was really impressed by this fish and it was quite an experience.

There was a bunch of guys down there that i got to talking to later on and only heard secondhand of one other caught, a 27"er. So i guess (?) it was a slow day overall.

great to hear!! I fish that spot, and the cleveland area a lot, and it's good news that some fish are showing up...went out a couple times last week and didn't get anything. this weather we're getting should be great for both the lake and the rivers!! I'm excited...Steelhead by day, Walleye at night, I love this time of year

I've never fished Edgewater for steelies, but I might try it this year. Any word on the night bite for walleye? (steelhead bite at night as well)

some people might get mad, but one of my honey hole at edege water for steelies is the old peir's Walk to the end of all 4 and cast. I like it because not a lot of people go down there. And fishing been good to me there this year. In the spring I took home a lot of eyes and in the fall the steelhead fishing is very good. I use 2 rods one to cast and the other with minnow. sorry if I made anyone mad

I'm going down tonight to cast for some eyes, I'll post results. Hopefully it will be better than my steelhead skunking today.

Way to go George! The fever for more really sets in after catching that first one doesn't it? It seems like you want to sneak to your honey hole any chance you get after that experience.
ANYWAY, after reading your experience yesterday morning I really got THE URGE, and hooked up the boat as soon as you know who went to work even though I went perch fishing just the day before.
On the way out of Edgewater guys were pulling perch right at the wall leading out to the lake (steel wall). Saw one guy pull in about a 10 or 11 incher.
When i was approaching the lighthouse I straightlined a little cleo and as I was setting up my second rod Bam and I see this nice steelie jumping like crazy in back of the boat. Started retrieving and he kept jumping until he broke my line. I'm not much experienced at trolling in shallow water for steelhead so i'll have to refine my technique I guess. I probably should have put the boat in neutral right away instead of trying to drag him with he 8 lb test line. There was only one other boat trailer in the parking lot yesterday.

I went out last night on the boat out of RR caught one eye 1/2 mile away from he mouth about 22 inches and rode over to the gold coast area (little hotty spot I know near there) and lost a pretty decent one about 6 lbs or so maybe bigger, one on a deep RR in 19 foot and the one I lost in 7 foot of water on a Husky jerk, both on inline boards, Looks like they are starting to come around I blanked out a couple times recently and now fish must mean fall bite is just around the corner.
