I see that cabelas has their depthmaster gold trolling reels in the bargin cave - 55 bucks. Any one use these reels. Seems like a decent price, thinkin of pickin up a few.

I have three of them. their sitting on a self in my fishing room. They are about 4 years old. They are a piece of junk. The drags won't tighten down.
When I first used them they were fine. They went bad right away. Unless they have corrected the problem I'd stay away from them. Go to cabelas and look a the reviews on them.

did a search and looked at the reviews on cabelas site. Seemed like mixed reviews...some people would comment on how the first reel they recevied did not work and say that they had to return it, then they give the product 5 stars  If they are made by okuma i dont want nothin to do with it. Ive had bad luck with their reels.

Honestly, I have a cluster of a reel collection... accudepth diawa, sealine diawa, okuma magma, a cabelas depthmaster II and 2 depthmaster golds. The depthmaster golds are the best I have. I, by no means, imply that what my collection is top shelf because I know its not, but the depthmast golds have worked very well for me.

Ive never had a problem with them either. I have a couple that are 4-5 years old, no problems yet. I just bought two more. I also have a couple penns, 6 diawa sealines and a couple accudepths. Ive only had drag issues with 2 of my sealines. to each his own, I swear I if someone is bound to have bad luck with something, it would be me ;). For the money I think its a decent reel.

I have 2 of the Depthmaster Gold linecounters and they have always worked fine for me. I've had them about 4 years. I don't use them a lot, maybe 20 times a year, but they have never been a problem.

For the same money, maybe even less if you find a sale, the accudepth plus daiwa is a proven reel, probably the best bang for the buck in line counters. The early accudepths were just o.k. at best, but the pluses are rock solid! If you want a work horse that will last a long long time go with the sealines, have a couple around 10 years old only had drags done once and clickers done 2 times and I use these reels more than your average bear.

I have a couple and when they work they work. When they don't they are done.

So what I am hearing is that you want a reasonably priced trolling outfit and pappa scotts recommendation is a good one.

Cabelas does not stock parts for them so when they fail they are done. So if you are on a budget then you want to get the best quality in that price range. If the reel fails at least then you can order the part not a new reel!

Well, here is my two cents worth, I am gearing up to fish Erie after a very long time and I saw the Cabela's Depthmaster reels for $25 and they were giving $20 off each $100 spent. So, I bought 10. I have $200.00 in them. I bought decent rods and now have $600 dollars to buy other equiptment that I will need. I will probably lose a fish or two but, what good are $80 reels if you don't have any sticks, spooms or harnesses to throw at them?
And as the cheap ones fail I will replace them with Dawai 47 SGLCs like Gary Zart uses. That is what he uses and if they hold up for him I WILL NEVER wear one out! And, I can afford to buy them a couple at a time.
So, there is my thougts!

This is what I bought and they seem to be pretty good...
I have also used the golds and they are just as good but I think the accudepth ones are a lil cheaper I'll find the link were I wanted some decent cheap rods

I'm 99% sure that Okuma makes those reels for Cabelas. They have the same guts as do the Magda series as I recall.

If I was going to troll for walleyes only..and use them 15 times per season, I am sure they would be fine.

I've had 4 of the golds for a few years now and they have worked fine. Only problem I've had is one of the counter reset buttons came off. I use a little screwdriver if I have to reset it. I still use 2 of the cheapo Cabelas linecounters for dipsys and they have held up fine too. They are not the best linecounters on the market I'm sure but like it was said earlier, if you buy all of the best reels and can't afford the rods, lures, dipsys, jets, and everything else, it doesn't do you much good.

I have a couple I bought late last season. I haven't used them yet so we will see how it goes. They lined them for me with Berkley 10# (can't remember which kind) and never charged me. The trolling beginner that I am ,for the price I couldn't go wrong.

we've got a couple cabelas depthmasters and a few okuma magdas on my dads boat. been using the okumas for about 5-6 yrs with no problems at all... great bang for the buck IMO. depthmaster IIs for about 3 yrs i think... no problems with those either. 55 bucks doesnt seem like a bad deal.

I ordered 4 depthmaster II reels a couple weeks ago,the largest ones,on sale @ 24.99 each from cabelas.Loaded them with 150 yds 14lb trilene xt and 10 colors of leadcore.Gonna experiment with it this coming year on erie.I used leadcore on inland lakes a lot over the years and they out produced snapweights for me.Thought they would be a nice change of pace if the dipseys arn't producing on a given day.

We started with all regular d/m's. Line counters would not work properly. Sent them all back and Cabelas helped us and provided D/M gold's. Very nice reel's. Love the anodized machined aluminum housing. I thought they were very high quality and work very well. They provide diferent handles (we use both styles they sent). Drags are very smooth as well.
We have two Okumas that need to go to the bottom of the lake. Drag is either locked tight, or very loose. No in-between.
We will replace these with D/M gold's as well.

Have 4 DepthMasterII 's also, have had no problems over a 4 year
period! Also have the Daiwa 47 C's, Again no Probrems! Just purchased
3 more DepthmasterII's @24.88, no reason just a good price put on by
Cabelas! To Each his Own! Also have 3 Okumas, that were completely
JUNK, no fine medium on the drags! Roll the Dice and See ya on the Ice!
