Additional boat ramp suggestion!

Due to my experience yesterday I would add one precaution, do not unhook the bow winch strap in the prep area. Take the extra few seconds after backing down the ramp, stop and unhook just short of the water … trust me it is a major pain to put a 17ft Javelin back on the trailer after it slides off 15ft short of the water! (A huge thanks to the 4 fisherman and 3 park rangers for lending a hand / anyone know of a simple gel coat repair kit?)

whoops! yeah im trying to break my dad of that habit!

pics?
No pics, just a vivid memory of the thud when the bottom of the boat hit the ramp! I’m really happy I had the motor trimmed up!! Possibly one of the eight good Samaritans took one …

knock on wood but I have always backed up to the water to unhook my winch. the trailer I have now I have the bunk rollers on it. I was launching down at Brookville back in aug. when I started letting the winch out the boat just started rolling back on the trailer. if I would have unhooked the winch before backing down to the water I would have lost my boat on the ramp. but my boat just launched itself then I unhooked the winch.

I actually witnessed such a thing happen while launching during a bass tournament. We were going out of the Moundsville ramp and I was sitting out in the river waiting for my partner to make his way back down after parking the truck. It's a long and steep ramp. The guy in the truck hit the brakes a little too hard about mid way down the ramp. Made a hell of a sound.

As has been said, it's probably a good idea to do all the time, but I personally base unhooking the winch strap by how steep the ramp is. If its a steep ramp I keep the bow strap on. Otherwise it's unhooked.

I did the same thing year before last in the Winter with no one else even in the parking lot. Frozen bunk boards just launched it onto the ramp when I just touched the brakes. It was me and a buddie and thats it. Ended up snapping my winch strap trying to winch it back up on the trailer. Tied it back to the hook and would back the trailer under the boat some then winch it real tight the back up some more. Once we got the boat off the ground we launched it and went fishing. I leave the thing hooked now:D

Just as important ALWAYS make sure you hear the winch clicking in the locked position if someone else is cranking your boat back on. I almost lost mine going up the ramp. 18 foot boat slide back 6 feet. I always listen for that clicking sound.
