I just picked up a used 2012 9.9 4-stroke mercury off of a fellow ogf'r. This isn't a pro or bigfoot just the regular model. I read a post online that the regular models tend to load up and foul out because its not meant to run low rpms. Do any of you have experience with the regular models? I hope this isn't the case.

Also I want to put a TR-1 on it before next Spring. The motor was set up for forward controls but the previous owner kept them. Is there any way that I can put an external shift lever on the motor? I wasn't planning on installing forward controls, just an ignition switch.

All help is greatly appreciated!

I have a 2007 9.9 4stroke plain remote with 5 pitch 4 blade Solas high thrust and it never fouls plugs while trolling all day on erie. I've cleaned the carb and adjusted settings, installed controlking. It runs OK, but would never buy another merc 9.9

I have 2007 9.9 4-stroke, ProKicker bigfoot model. I had to have fuel lines replaced and carb cleaned in 2012 due to ethanol in gas eating up the fuel line. Carb was clogged with varnish deposits, my fault! In the old boats with portable fuel tank we always unhooked fuel line and ran motor till it ran out of gas. Why I didn't this would be necessary with 4 stroke hooked to onboard fuel lines for main motor, I don't know. Mechanic told me to unhook fuel line and run it out of gas after every trip, should not gum up again. I have done this ever since, and buy "recreational gas" - no ethanol when I can. Have not had fuel problems since. Idles nice all day on Erie, 7-8 long days each year. I did adjust linkage from the forward controls to have idle range different spot on the handle cause where I wanted was right on the "hump" where it changed from idle to faster speeds.

I'm on my second 9.9 ProKicker and other than hard starting on initial start of the morning they have been trouble-free. I run gas with ethanol, don't use additives, etc. My motor rarely sits more than a week without being used which probably helps. Current model is a 2012.
