Thanks I got that info, but what happens when I slow down .5 mph? Obviously it'll go a little deeper but how much? & will the tad still perform the same?

Right on offshores website they have the charts. That's where I got mine then printed and laminated them.

 

Definitely very speed dependent weight. If you are not using crankbaits at 1 mph or less you need to.only way to tell would be get in 10' of water and experiment.

 

I see the dive charts on the website. I should have been more clear. I want to run #3 tads at 1.5 or maybe even 1 mph. There is NO info on that anywhere. Not even in the precision trolling app, that is interactive..... It just seems weird to me that they have a dive curve at 1.5 for the #1s and #2s but not the #3s. I guess i will have to come up with my own like wallhangin said, just hoped someone in OGF land had already figured this out

 

Why don't you just run #2 or #1 tadpoles if you want to go real slow ? Those 2 sizes really perform well at those speeds.

 

Do to speed required to turn spinner blades you wd have to make sure the blade your using spins at. 1.0Mph

Of course. I always look at how the bait stick or meat, is running next to the boat before it is deployed. Like glen said I should just bite the bullet and buy some #2s. I bought the #3s cause that's what Craig at Erie outfitters recommend. I'm sure they are great under the right circumstances, I just wasn't aware at the time that they needed to be run at 2+ mph to have any idea where there at.

Will do. And that should work fine to get right to the bottom. I did pick up some 2s so I'll be able to get to a specific depth under 30 ft.

I'm still not totally clear on how the tads affect the trailing bait compared to inlines though.

 

I was running 3 oz bouncers this past weekend trolling in about 40-45 ft of water around 1.4 - 1.6 and was hitting bottom around 65 ft back (10 lb diameter line). May be a good starting point, although I'm sure the tadpoles dive a little quicker

 

I'm not sure why you are making such a big deal about this. A 3 tadpole is 3 oz. Look at the 3oz dive chart and add a few feet. For comparison a 1oz inline and a 1 tadpole with 100 ft of line are approx 17 ft and 22 ft. Unless your boat runs a perfectly straight line and never encounters a wave or changes speed your baits are slightly changing depth all the time. It's ok.

couldn't you just multiply the depth of the #1 tadpole @ 1.5mph by 3 and get the depth for #3

 

Doesn't work that way, there are equations that involve more than that.

 

yeah well I was just wondering....I have some tadpoles but have not really used them much.

 

Same idea as a crank bait, the longer the line you let it out, the less depth per foot of line will be achieved.
