I'm busy trying to get back into my rebuilt house and seeming;y will be for a while yet? Normally, I'm hitting my bit early spots by now. +-Just wondering if the warmer days and nights have got crappie exploring the shallows yet? 81 today, starting to think filets! Any local Portage or Summit county lakes waking up yet for a crappie bite? Water temps, or lakes, if you got them, "spots" not needed! Leads appreciated...

I'm with you, Jer. But no "drowning minnows"(for crappie) for me! I haven't used minnows for them for over 60 years now-just slows me down! I'll be sending you and Gary some of my "Maribou Magic" lures in appreciation of your recent "help me out day"! Once you try them, I think you'll agree! In the mail soon!-looking forward to your "training day"! Thx

Ya CJ,,,, if someone would help us out, give us a tip, ...
As noted not much activity overall yet but some places have been going for quite a while now although sporadically. Intermittent cold spells would pause the action. Some of that info is in the "Tis' the season" thread.

Crappie just started spawning at the Portage Lakes! Was there Thursday night and caught 4, one was 13"! Caught a bunch of redears too. Biggest was 10.75"!!! New PB! Went back Sunday morning. The cold morning shut down the redears, but got 5 nice crappie and a bass. Bass are spawning back in the coves. As we were leaving, I found a spot with a big school of spawning crappie in 2' of water. Could see the gleam of those black backs in the sun. Some looked pretty big!

This is from page 16 of the current 2025-2026 Ohio Regs Booklet:

The third paragraph is the applicable reg. The key words are “and introduce”. The intent is to prohibit the introduction of a species into a body of water where it doesn’t already exist. It is perfectly legal to catch fish in accordance with the regs from one lake/pond and transport and dump them in another as long as those species already exist in the second lake/pond. Typical species like bluegill, crappie and bass are already almost everywhere.

Had an hour late evening trip to my local lake,WF, early last week(shore). Got "8"!! whoppers! Whoppers for Wingfoot, 1-13.5, 2-12s, rest 10 to 10.5"! The "No Limits" out there for several years has finally started to produce a "higher quality" of black crappie!
ps-Not going to say what I did with them, let's just say they're in "wet storage", JB!
